KOORIE club

At Dinjerra, we have 11 students who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander! So, we have set up a Koorie Club which runs once a fortnight with Ms. Rebecca in the library.

Koorie Club is a wonderful opportunity for our students to come together in an empowering and culturally supportive space. Building and maintaining relationships at Koorie Club can strengthen our students’ sense of identity, belonging and learning outcomes. 

We follow a routine which is student-led and consists of:

• Acknowledging Country
• A Sharing Yarn, where students take turns to share things about their culture and lives outside of school.
• A hands-on activity - craft or something outside to connect to nature. Sometimes we have visitors like Julianne, our KESO (Koorie Engagement Support Officer).
• A story or book chosen from the Indigenous Texts shelf.

Since we began Koorie Club in 2025, we have observed some lovely connections between our students and their growing confidence to express themselves culturally. We have also received some delightful, positive feedback from the students and their families, and we have even had another school contact us to check out how it runs. It's been a very positive experience for our students and school.
