Upcoming Change to Social Media Access for Under 16s

From 10 December, young people in Australia under 16 will no longer be able to create or hold accounts on certain social media platforms.

This is not a ban — it is a delay, designed to give young people time to develop their digital literacy skills and resilience before fully engaging with social media. Being logged into an account increases exposure to features that encourage extended screen time and can present content that may impact wellbeing.

The change aims to support young people’s health and safety online, and there are resources available to help parents, carers, and students prepare.

Here are three ways to get ready:

  1. Read eSafety’s Frequently Asked Questions for Parents and Carers link below to find out what’s changing and why.

         2. Register here for an Esafety live Webinar.

       3. Use the Get Ready Guide and Conversation Starters below to begin preparing for change.

Further information and resources are available at eSafety’s Social Media Age Restrictions Hub below.
