Year 2 Inquiry Project

As part of our Inquiry unit, Places and Spaces, the Grade 2 students have been exploring what makes our community. To launch their learning, students investigated the concept of a precinct and watched a video of a drone fly over Melbourne’s Sport and Entertainment Precinct, discovering how different spaces work together to meet the needs of the community.
Students have also been learning about sustainability and how sustainable features help care for our environment to support our communities now, and in the future. We walked around the school with the school's map to look at our sustainable features to link with our current project, designing and building our own precincts. Each Grade 2 class created groups where they could choose their designated precincts, including Entertainment, Medical, Farm, Food, Education, Sport, Transport, Park, Shopping and Accomodation. Using their own knowledge of places within their community, students drew out their plans and labelled it with its key features of sustainability, and materials they would need to bring their precincts to life. They began constructing these during Inquiry this week and it is wonderful to see students so engaged while working collaboratively and bringing out their creativity.
We cannot wait to see the finished precincts come together to create one large, vibrant community in our Grade 2 community.
