YEAR 6 WINTER SPORT LIGHTNING PREMIERSHIP

On Tuesday, the Year 6 students participated in the Murdoch District Interschool Lightning Premiership Winter Sport competition. Students selected to play in one of the following sports – netball, football or soccer.

The interschool competition is about students developing their skills, knowledge of the game, sportsmanship, dealing with winning and losing and most importantly, having fun.

The students competed against students from the schools within the District- Woodlands, Pearcedale, Langwarrin, Baxter, Somerville and Somerville Rise. All the Sports Coordinators from the other schools were impressed by all students’ behaviour and sportsmanship.

Netball was an extremely popular choice for the girls, so we entered 4 teams. A number of students had never played netball and after their positive experience, some girls are keen to pursue the opportunity to join a local club. The Girls A team finished 4th in Pool A and the Mixed team were runners up to Pearcedale. Two teams were entered in Pool C. Both teams were undefeated up until the last game, where both LPPS teams played each other. Team C1 went on to play against Woodlands to determine the winner of the pool; Woodlands won 10 – 1. C2 played Langwarrin and were also defeated. Overall, Team C1 finished 2nd in the pool and C2 4th. It was so rewarding to see all the students develop their skills and knowledge over a 5-week period. A big thank you to Ms Wainwright, Shae Henricus and Julie (parent of Chloe D) for giving up their time to train and coach the teams.

The Mixed Soccer also had an enjoyable experience. Although they only won a friendly match, they returned to school with smiles on their faces. With Mr Emerson being on leave, Mr Freake was more than happy to take over as coach. Once again, Mr Freake gave up numerous lunch/snack breaks to train the students; all of whom were appreciative of Mr Freake’s commitment.

Two teams were entered in the 9 V 9 competition. Team A had a mix of wins and losses to finish 4th in Pool A. Once again, I was able to draw on Layne Quinn to coach the boys on the day. He was extremely impressed with the boys’ commitment, enthusiasm, sportsmanship and respect on the day. Coached by Ms Harrison, the B team played off in the Grand Final against Pearcedale. The final was close until the last 5 minutes of the game, where Pearcedale kicked a very quick 5 goals, to win by a large margin.

Thank you to all the parents who came along to support our students. They were also impressed at the way our students conducted themselves throughout the day.
