Endeavour - 1000 Steps Excursion

Year 6 Excursion – 1000 Steps Kokoda Memorial Walk 

On Wednesday 25th March, our Year 6 students participated in the 1000 Steps Kokoda Track Memorial Walk at Mount Dandenong as the culmination of their Steps Through History unit.

Throughout the term, students explored the theme of challenge by researching significant historical individuals who demonstrated resilience, courage and perseverance. This excursion provided a powerful opportunity to bring that learning to life.

As students made their way up the track, they were challenged both physically and mentally, showing determination, teamwork and encouragement for one another along the journey. Carrying their group banners, students paused at the top of the steps to share with the group who they were 'walking for,' connecting their own experience of challenge with the stories of the individuals they had studied. 

A highlight of the day was participating in a moving ANZAC Service, facilitated by Parks Victoria. Through moments of reflection, readings, wreath laying, the Last Post and a minute’s silence, students respectfully acknowledged the significance of the Kokoda Campaign and honoured those who served. The ceremony provided a meaningful and memorable connection to Australian history.

The day offered students the chance to step outside the classroom and engage deeply with both history and personal growth. Many students spoke about the sense of accomplishment they felt upon completing the walk, as well as the importance of perseverance and mindset when facing challenges.

We are incredibly proud of the resilience, respect and maturity shown by all students throughout the day. It was a truly memorable experience for everyone involved.
