Building Partnerships with our Secondary Schools - Junior Explorer Day
On Monday, our Year 4 students had the exciting opportunity to experience a taste of secondary school life by attending Junior Explorer Day at Academy of Mary Immaculate and Simonds College.
The girls enjoyed a wonderful day at the Academy, where they participated in a range of engaging learning experiences. They made delicious pizzas in Home Economics, explored fascinating science experiments, and created bracelets during a Social Justice lesson. Guided by friendly Year 8 students, the girls toured the school, received support throughout each activity, and completed a fun scavenger hunt that introduced them to the school's history and facilities.
Meanwhile, the boys visited Simonds College, where they were placed into mixed groups with Year 4 students from a variety of schools. This provided a fantastic opportunity to meet new people, work collaboratively, and build new friendships. Throughout the day, the boys participated in a range of hands-on activities, including pancake making, table tennis, hip hop dancing, and an exciting STEM challenge where teams designed and built the tallest tower using only spaghetti and marshmallows. These activities encouraged creativity, teamwork, communication, and problem-solving while allowing students to discover new skills and interests.
Both experiences gave our Year 4 students a valuable glimpse into everyday secondary school life. It was wonderful to see them embrace new challenges, participate enthusiastically, and make lasting memories. We thank both the Academy and Simonds College for providing such engaging and welcoming experiences for our students.
3/4 Spotlight
During our NAIDOC Week lesson, students developed their understanding of the importance of NAIDOC Week and explored what we can learn from First Nations peoples, their cultures, and their deep connections to Country.
To begin the lesson, students watched an introductory video about NAIDOC Week before reading We Are Australians by Duncan Smith and Nicole Goodwin. The story prompted thoughtful discussions about the meaning of Country, the importance of storytelling, ways we can care for the land and animals, and why NAIDOC Week is an important celebration across Australia.
Working collaboratively in small groups, students shared their ideas, listened respectfully to the perspectives of others, and participated in meaningful discussions before returning to the whole class to share their learning. This lesson also provided an opportunity to strengthen students' social and emotional learning skills through respectful communication and active listening.
To conclude the session, students reflected on their learning by identifying one new thing they had discovered about First Nations peoples and cultures. It was wonderful to see students engaging thoughtfully with Australia's rich Indigenous histories, cultures, and traditions.
