Reading your child's NAPLAN Individual Student Report
All students who participated in NAPLAN received their Individual Student Report (ISR), this week.
Since 2023, NAPLAN results have been reported against proficiency standards to give parents and carers a clearer understanding of their child's achievement. These standards are set at a challenging but reasonable level that students are expected to achieve at the time of NAPLAN testing.
The front page of the report provides general information about the assessments and explains how to read the report. The second and third pages show the student's results for each assessment area. Results are reported using one of four proficiency levels: Exceeding, Strong, Developing and Needs additional support.
The report also shows:
- the student's achievement compared with the national average for their year level (shown as a black triangle), and
- the range of achievement for the middle 60% of students in their year level (shown as a light shaded rectangle).
The final page of the report provides a summary of the skills typically demonstrated by students at each proficiency level.
Exceeding – The student's result exceeds expectations at the time of testing.
Strong – The student's result meets challenging but reasonable expectations at the time of testing.
Developing – The student's result indicates they are working towards expectations at the time of testing.
Needs additional support – The student's result indicates they are not achieving the learning outcomes expected at the time of testing and are likely to need additional support to progress satisfactorily.
These proficiency descriptions provide a general overview of the knowledge and skills typically demonstrated by students at each level. Individual students may display different strengths depending on the questions they answered most successfully. Students whose results are near the top of a proficiency level are likely to demonstrate a broader range of skills or more complex understanding, while those near the lower end may demonstrate fewer of the skills described. Short summaries of the proficiency descriptions for the relevant year level are included in each student's Individual Student Report. There are also slight variations in the descriptions across the different assessment areas.
Does only the 'Needs additional support' level indicate a student requires support?
No. The Needs additional support proficiency level identifies students who may be at risk of not progressing satisfactorily at school. However, students in the Developing or even Strong proficiency levels may also benefit from targeted support in particular areas.
Teachers use NAPLAN results alongside classroom assessment and their professional knowledge of each student to identify strengths, areas for improvement, and any additional support that may be required.
