Week 3! Already one quarter of the way down in Term 4. This week seen our Year 12s finishing up with a final assembly on Monday afternoon and breakfast on Tuesday morning. Year 8 Students have headed to Melbourne for camp and all Torquay Community House programs are in full swing. This newsletter will look at our local Surf Coast Youth Centre, what they offer and what some of our students have been busy doing there as well as the newly unveiled Blue Tree at Torquay Community House.
The Surf Coast shire is full of vibrant young people who do fabulous things every day.
To keep up to date on what Surf Coast Youth have on offer for the 12-25 -year-old crowd follow ‘Surf Coast Youth’ on Instagram or like the Surf Coast Youth Facebook page. You can also contact them on 5261 0600 or email youthdevelopment@surfcoast.vic.gov.au.
Students (and their friends) are encouraged to attend Surf Coast Youth Centre in Kurrambee Myaring Community Centre (KMCC), 12 Merrijig Dr Torquay. Here they will find free food, Nintendo Switches, Table Tennis, Music Equipment, Wooden Games, Card Games, Board Games, Mindfulness Books, Free Wifi, Bean Bags to sit on and regular visits from Larry the Therapy Dog.
Throughout last term a small group of students assisted local artist Jessy Rebel in the designing of a mural to be painted on a wall at the Youth Centre. During the School Holidays some of those students then helped paint the mural with the assistance of Jessy. More of Jessy’s work can be found via this link https://www.jessirebelart.com.au The photos below show the work in progress and the final product.
The Blue Tree Project brings people together to create safer spaces to talk about mental health. On Friday the 20th October at 2pm the Torquay’s Community Centre unveiled their Blue Tree – an initiative of the Woman’s Sharing Shed. The Blue Tree Initiative’s mission is to help spark difficult conversations and encourage people to speak up when battling mental health concerns. By spreading the paint and spreading the message that "it’s OK to not be OK", we can help break down the stigma that’s still largely attached to mental health.
