Year 8 Melbourne City Camp

FLOURISH:  Our Year 8 Students enjoyed their time away in the city last week for camp.

Exploring Melbourne, they participated in a range of activities including bowling at Strike, sports at MSAC and rock climbing at Hard Rock.

A great time was had by all!

Year 9 ODE Raft Building & Surfing

UNITE: Our students in the Year 9 Outdoor Education class  worked as a team, pulling together to do a bit of raft building down at Spring Creek.  As you can see, their raft creations were successful and our students were able to float their rafts in the creek.

Our students also had a session of surfing down at Torquay, which gives our students further experience with outdoor environments, building team work and resilience.

Year 9 Journalism

STRIVE: Recently in Year 9 Journalism, students have been experimenting with different forms of news media. Last week students focused on print media and how elements such as colour, images, size, positioning and headings are used by journalists to gain and maintain readers' attention and interest.

Students put these elements into action creating their own magazine spreads on a topic of interest. Kingston C, Jay W and Kiarra O's awesome spreads can be seen in the images.

Year 11 VET Sport & Recreation

FLOURISH: Our VET Sport & Recreation students enjoyed a day Rock Climbing out at the You Yangs, where our students get to experience different recreational activities in different environments.

Year 11 Environmental Science

RESPECT: Year 11 Environmental Science students visited Barwon Water at Black Rock to learn about pollution and sustainability initiatives.  This is part of their work in the Unit 2 Environmental Science topics on pollution and monitoring pollution.

Courage to Care

RESPECT:  Courage to Care Victoria facilitate Upstander Programs that educate about the dangers of racism, prejudice, discrimination, and bystander behaviour. Students were fortunate enough to hear from Holocaust survivor Louie who provided a first-hand account of his experiences during World War Two and the importance of upstanders in the presence of discriminatory actions. Students then split into small groups with Courage to Care volunteers to further explore impacts of stereotypes and prejudices as well as how to safely act and be an upstander.

Wood-fired Goodness

FLOURISH: In the spirit of Hands-On Learning, our students came together this year this year to embark on an exciting project: building a wood-fired oven. This endeavour required not only teamwork but also creative planning and design. The result? Delicious homemade pizzas that have become a beloved treat for our program.

Barwon Valley Indigenous Garden Project

UNITE: Our VCE-Vocational Major students headed to Barwon Valley to assist the community with an indigenous garden project.  Students have been participating in a range of activities, including planting fauna native to the region and landscaping the area to provide seating for smoking and storytelling ceremonies.

Tennis Triumph

We had a wonderful week of tennis for SCSC!

FLOURISH: Monday 2rd October, Year 8 students competed and won in the Inter School tennis tournament, which means they will advance to the Western Metro finals in two weeks time. Great effort by our team Hazel, Sarah, Scarlet and Sunny who all showed outstanding skill and sportsmanship.

The week before, our Year 7s also left with a win, their Western Metro competition coming up soon.  What a fantastic effort from all!

Year 9/10 Mixed Table Tennis

UNITE: On Thursday the 19th October, students headed to the Geelong Table Tennis Centre to participate in the the inter-school boys & girls Table Tennis Competition.  There were around 120 students competing in the round robin.  It was a very hot and muggy day but the students rose to the occasion with the Girls finishing second in their pool and the boys finishing third.

Year 9/10 Girls Basketball

STRIVE: Intermediate girls had a fantastic day out at interschool basketball held at AWA stadium. The girls won 2 out of their 3 games quite comfortably! Congratulations to Bella B, Maya M, Lylah J, Jordan H, Sienna N, Phoebe V and Olivia B on your outstanding showcase of talent & sportsmanship showed throughout the day. Special shout out to Lily W and Jas C for scoring and coaching on the day.

Year 9/10 Boys Basketball

UNITE: The Year 9 & 10 Boys Basketball team competed in interschool sports on Thursday 12th October. The boys tried valiantly against Geelong HS and Bellarine in the pool games, posting two narrow losses.  Throughout the day the boys improved and by the last game they began to play some good team basketball. Some questionable referring decisions in the final seconds unfortunately meant that the boys posted another narrow loss in their game versus Grovedale. Koby N and Max J showed excellent outside shooting with Alex B’s physical play and willingness to get take on the opposition some of the highlights on the day.

Barwon Respect Cup

RESPECT: A group of students from Year 9 were selected to attend the Barwon Respect Cup. The Respect Cup centres on developing positive bystander actions to support speaking out against gender-based violence and discrimination. In the morning students actively participated in a range of workshops facilitated by City of Greater Geelong & Sexual Assault and Family Violence Centre about taking a leadership role in promoting healthy and respectful relationships. In the afternoon, students participated in a round robin mixed netball competition against a range of local Barwon schools. Surf Coast students’ ability to engage in discussions as well as show respect and sportsmanship on the court were a standout to the facilitators.

Well Done to Willem's Outstanding Performance!

STRIVE: Willem C's performance in the Melbourne Marathon Festival 10k was truly outstanding. Out of over 9,000+ participants, he secured an impressive 79th place, putting him in the top 1% of the field.  What's even more impressive is his average pace of 3 minutes and 43 seconds per kilometre, which translates to a blistering speed of approximately 16 kilometres per hour (kph). This remarkable feat highlights not only his exceptional speed but also his ability to maintain it over the course of a 10k race, making Willem a standout talent in the running world.

Introducing Our New Volleyball Court!

STRIVE:  Last week, we installed a brand-new beach volleyball court.

Surf Coast Secondary students Will G and Ethan S presented the idea of creating a volleyball court.  Being avid volleyballers themselves, these students showed initiative and dedication. Researching not only materials and location, but the benefits that it will bring to the College community, we are very impressed by their efforts and pleased to see it come to fruition.

A wonderful addition to the College – and perfect on sunny days!
