PRINCIPAL'S REPORT

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome to our latest newsletter.

Year 12 Graduation Assembly

It was a great pleasure last week to be part of the Surf Coast Secondary College 2023 Year 12 Graduation Assembly last week.

The assembly was attended by our 2023 graduands, parents and teachers as well as students from Years 11 and 7. The assembly was an opportunity for us to celebrate our 2023 Year 12 cohort, recognise their efforts in their final year of high school and award certificates to a selection of students who have achieved academic excellence in each VCE subject or the Vocational Major.

Our 2023 school captains each stepped up to the podium and shared their reflections on the year and their time at SCSC. We heard an address from Ms Rachel Barney, Assistant Principal for Years 11 & 12, and we acknowledge the support our students have received from Ms Alex Brown, Leading Teacher for Years 11 & 12, and Ms Kristal Ross, Learning Community Leader for Year 12. The formalities ended with a video wrap up that included photographs from the last six years our Year 12s have spent at our college.

I’d like to thank everyone involved in the assembly and say a special thank you to those parents and carers who came along and celebrated with us. We look forward to seeing you all at the Valedictory Dinner at GMHBA stadium later next month.

Traumatic World Events

As you will be aware, the current situation in the Middle East is dominating news headlines and social media platforms. As conflict in Gaza and Israel continues, it has come to our attention that many young people have access to graphic images and videos from the war zone.

If your children use any platforms including TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook and others, please be aware that it is most likely they have already been exposed to content from this current conflict that can be traumatising and disturbing to our young people. If you have younger children we suggest carefully monitoring your child’s use of social media and providing support and contextual understanding should they be confronted with material that is not age appropriate. Please feel free to contact the college if you require further support for your child on this matter.

2024 Planning

Next week some important information will be sent out to parents and carers outlining some significant changes and adjustments to learning programs and wellbeing supports commencing in 2024.

These changes will also be shared with students as we finalise the 2023 academic school year and prepare for our Head Start program where students will commence their 2024 subjects and learning later this term.

All these adjustments have been planned in consultation with the school review panel as well as forums and feedback from teachers, students and parents. We are responding to the clear messages our community has shared with the college leadership team. We will be implementing best practices that are well researched and proven to have a high positive impact on student learning and wellbeing.

There is a real buzz of excitement around the college with the changes to come and we look forward to working with you all as we enter a new and exciting stage of the Surf Coast Secondary College journey.

Thank you and take care.

Shane Elevato,

Acting Principal.
