Round the Classes - Specialist Teachers

Indonesian: Ibu Susan
In Indonesian we have started writing and performing small group role plays in the 4/5 and 5/6 classes. The students have been practising speaking fluently and memorising their dialogue. They sound great! The younger classes have welcomed our new teddies, Gusti the gajah and Bulan the badak. The students have started reading the story Di mana Gajah Hijau? Where is the Green Elephant? This text uses a combination of new and known words. Stephen's class has also begun researching the beautiful Borneo Pygmy Elephant.
PE: Troy
On Tuesday all students participated in cricket clinics held by the Blind Cricket Association of South Australia. We had three players come and work with students and taught them how to play blind cricket and answer any questions. Students used modified balls and learnt how to bat and bowl in a game of blind cricket. They also got to see how fast the ball is bowled in Blind Cricket, with speeds up to and beyond 100km/h. It was a great way to see how sport can be inclusive and a terrific way to finish our cricket unit for the year.

This term the Year 5/6 class has been starting to learn about Economics and Business. They have started working on a term-long project, in which they plan and design a product or service, including thinking about their target customers, costs, revenue and profit, and how they can market their idea. They have all chosen very creative and interesting ideas so I am looking forward to later in the term, when other groups will have a chance to choose to ‘invest’ in their classmates’ ideas.
In Year 3/4, students have been doing a project that combines History, Geography, and Civics and Citizenship. They are working on research about an Australian city, town or area, including finding out about what it was like in the past, its geographical features, and local council and volunteer groups. They will then present their information in a museum style exhibition.
In Year 2/3, we are exploring the history of celebrations, including why and how different people in Australia celebrate a diverse range of important days or seasons. Students will choose a celebration to do more independent research into as the term continues.
In Junior Primary (the Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 classes), we are inquiring into the concepts of continuity and change, looking at how things have changed from the past and the impact of this on our daily lives. We have investigated artefacts like photos and objects from the past to understand how people lived in the past, and also to predict how things might change in the future.
Science: Paige
This term in Science we have begun our learning about Chemical Science. We have explored matter in the forms of solids, liquids and gases and determined the differences and similarities between these three states. Students have experimented with mixing liquids, liquids and solids and are beginning to determine whether the outcomes are reversible or irreversible. We used cabbage water to change the colour of a variety of liquids, tried to mix oil with water, we curdled milk, add Alker Setzer to oil and water to make a lava lamp, made ooblek, mixed mentos with coke and we added bicarb and vinegar to create a fun fizzle. We also attempted a classroom safe version of elephant's toothpaste.
Gardening: Jo
The Year 2 students are learning about the Indigenous Garden using various techniques- observing, listening, smelling, touching and tasting.
There are many varieties of plants in our garden and they have different purposes, some are for eating, for bush medicine or for shelter for birds and animals.
The students noticed the sweet smell of the River Mint and the strong lemon scent of the Lemon Myrtle. They heard the sound of the water running in the fountain and the local magpies flying by. We talked about the seasons we recognise and the extra 2 seasons in Aboriginal culture. The students also planted seedling trays up to get ready for Summer planting of vegetables.
