Boarding
Mr Andrew Monk, Director of Boarding
Recently, I attended a boarding conference where almost 70 boarding staff gathered to hear and discuss a range of topics. One observation I made was that many of our boarding schools in Australia are not separate from the day school; the boarders tend to live on-site. Now, although this would definitely have its advantages, I think our arrangement is better.
In our situation, I look at it as an opportunity for our boarders to leave ‘home’ so to speak and go to school; separating school and home life is important for our boarders as it provides a clear delineation for the mind. Walking to school from the Boarding House is also a time to relax and slowly walk into the rhythm of school. It is a time for them to walk together, have a laugh and simply converse about the ‘stuff’ teenagers talk about. This is so important and it’s lost in many boarding schools and the daily life rituals of a teenager. We’re proud to have this as part of the boarding routine - the walk to school even ifg it involves dragging feet, is an important part of the day for boarders, socially, physically, and mentally.

Oli has been a pleasure to have in the Boarding House. He is one of three Credlin boys to live and learn at College. The middle brother of Aiden (graduated in 2025) and Isaac (Year 8), Oli is immersed in boarding life. He is an avid sportsman and is particularly talented in AFL. He is a wonderful friend and roommate, and always has a smile on his face. He is best known for his kindness, empathy, and humour. It is a delight to have Oli contribute to boarding and the positive culture of the Speirs House. Thank you Oli.
Oli shared some words of reflection:

"I started boarding nearly two years ago, but it feels like I’ve been here for much longer. I quickly made great mates who helped me settle in and make the Boarding House a positive place. Boarding has heaps of opportunities, such as playing basketball on Wednesday nights, getting help from teachers in prep and coming from a small town where you have to travel to get anywhere. It’s good to have a footy oval and gym within walking distance from the school. Boarding has been a great experience, and I recommend it to anyone who gets the chance."
