Middle Years
Dr Ben Hawth
This week, we have been interviewing Year 8 applicants for Middle Years House Captain positions. For the Heads of House and me, it has been a real privilege to read each application letter and to explore how each applicant sees themselves as a leader. It has been encouraging to see some common themes flow through each interview and each House:
Our Year 8 students are articulate, well-mannered, and well-presented. They each held interesting conversations and were able to reflect upon their experiences as Year 7s new to the College and/or the Senior School.
They demonstrate a desire to help others to enjoy and do well in the Middle Years. They all came across as genuinely kind and caring individuals.
They admired and respected the previous Middle Years Captains, especially those who helped out on the Year 6 Orientation Day back in 2024. The current Year 8s saw them as examples of strong leaders.
Our Year 8 students are busy outside of the classroom. The number of co-curricular activities they participate in is really exciting, and they have a wealth of experience in different areas, be it sport, drama, music, or community service.
Well done to the Year 8 Middle Years House Captain applicants. You are all excellent role models in the Middle Years, and I’m looking forward to an exciting year ahead for you all.
The Year 7s will be lucky to have you looking out for them during their transition into Senior School. It will be a hard decision choosing the 2026 Middle Years Captains, but it is worth remembering that everyone is a leader, with or without a badge.
