YEAR 11 ATAR CAMP
In week four, the year 11 ATAR class set off on their industry and university camp tour, where they visited Perth and the surrounding area.
On the first day, we visited Willgrow farms, where the students spoke to Brad and Jass Alps from Wakedale Farms. Wakedale Farms produce cattle and sheep, and then value add to their product by selling it via gate to plate. Valken, Mary-Joy and past student Kayla De Villiers then showed us around their property where they grow Lucerne and wheat under irrigation. They value add to their lucerne by cutting it for chaff, and their wheat via milling their own product, which is then sold into bakeries to produce high-quality breads such as sour dough.
From there we made our way to the Loose-Leaf Lettuce company farm and processing plant, where the Dibra family explained their vertically integrated business structure, showcasing the operations undertaken from production to the finished product delivered to consumers.
On day two, the students visited Curtin and Murdoch University. At each university they were given an overview of the courses available to them, the entry requirements and current Ag students talked to them about their experiences in the course. They then participated is several learning activities.
At Murdoch they visited to the vet museum where they learnt how to identify different animal skulls, and the digital lab where they used VR headsets to work with cattle.
At Curtin, the Crop Centre for Disease Management (CCDM) showed us around their greenhouse trials and explained the work that they were researching before the students were given a tour of the accommodation options onsite.
On day three, the students visited Linley Valley Pork, where they learnt about the Craig Mostyn group’s business structure and its importance in the pork market. The students were then given a tour of the abattoir and witnessed the processing of the pigs.
Afterwards the class travelled to Australian Grains Technologies (AGT) in Northam, where they received a tour of the facilities and got to look at the small-scale sized machinery used when seeding and harvesting trial plots. The staff explained the process involved in breeding new varieties for farmers, and then the students visited a trial site to see the process in action in the paddock.
