As we move into the final weeks of the term, students are eagerly looking forward to our upcoming excursion to Polly Woodside. This exciting learning experience will provide students with the opportunity to step back in time and explore life aboard a historic sailing ship. In preparation for our History unit in term 4.

In Mathematics, students explored the difference between mass (how heavy an object is) and capacity (how much a container can hold). They practised estimating and comparing the weight of a variety of objects, using mathematical language to explain their thinking. Students also investigated capacity by comparing different containers and discussing which could hold more or less. To conclude the unit, students completed a creative layered salt activity, where they carefully considered the capacity of their container and calculated how much coloured salt was needed for each layer. They used simple equations to plan and create their designs, applying their understanding of capacity in a hands-on and engaging way.

In Writing, students completed their autobiographies by stepping into the shoes of Despereaux and Mig, writing from each character's perspective to recount important events and experiences. Throughout the writing process, students focused on correctly using contractions and organising their ideas into clear paragraphs. This week, students also began exploring complex sentences, learning how conjunctions can be used to join ideas and add detail to their writing. Over the coming weeks, students will apply these skills to create a mini-book, incorporating a range of conjunctions to make their writing more engaging, detailed, and sophisticated.

In Reading, students continued their study of The Tale of Despereaux, developing their comprehension skills through a focus on summarising, inferencing, identifying the author’s purpose, and analysing character development. To strengthen their summarising skills, students created a news report that captured the key events from the week’s chapters in a clear and concise manner. They also explored character development by writing a postcard from Despereaux’s perspective, describing recent events in the story and reflecting on how these experiences shaped his thoughts, feelings, and actions.
