Supporting students to stay happy, safe and connected...

Being SunSmart

With warmer weather just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about being ‘SunSmart’ outside.

Our SMPS SunSmart policy outlines protective measures our staff take to help students stay safe from UV.

As part of our policy, students are required to wear hats outside, in unshaded areas, in Term 4 and Term 1 every year. This requirement applies regardless of the weather on any given day.

 Hats:

  • Students must wear their SMPS wide-brimmed hat when outside in unshaded areas.
  • We are mindful that some students may have lost their hat over the colder months.
  • To support families who may need to purchase a new hat, students who do not have a hat will still be able to go outside to play in shaded areas.
  • Please write your child’s name and grade on their hat to reduce chances of it getting lost.
  • Staff will be modelling SunSmart practices by wearing their own hats when outside.

Sunscreen:

  • Please ensure your child applies sunscreen at home before school. Encouraging children to apply their own sunscreen at home is a great way to develop their independence.
  • We encourage students to bring a small bottle of sunscreen to school, so that they can reapply before breaks and other outdoor activities.
  • Staff will provide reminders for students to apply personal sunscreen (if they choose to bring some in) before breaks and other outdoor activities.

Other protective measures:

  • A Hot Day timetable, where students will remain indoors at recess and lunch, will apply on days of extreme heat. Leadership will make the decision on the day, should this occur. Leadership will make an announcement to staff on these occasions, similar to on wet days.
  • Children are also encouraged to bring wraparound sunglasses at school for further UV protection.
