Grade 5 News for Term 3

After a fantastic Term 2, the Grade 5 team warmly welcomes everyone to an exciting Term 3! We have a busy and engaging term ahead, filled with rich learning experiences, special events and opportunities for students to challenge themselves both inside and outside the classroom.

Literacy

Our literacy block continues to provide explicit, evidence-based instruction across all areas of reading and writing. Students will continue to participate in our Daily Review, Oral Reading Fluency, Spelling Mastery, morphology, language comprehension, dictation and writing lessons to strengthen their literacy skills.

Throughout Term 3, students will:

• Participate in a novel study of Blueback by Tim Winton, exploring themes of environmental responsibility, family, courage and connection to place.
• Develop reading comprehension skills through predicting, inferring, summarising, visualising, analysing characters and making meaningful connections.
• Write imaginative narratives inspired by the themes, characters and coastal setting of Blueback.
• Create persuasive and informative texts exploring sustainability, marine environments and the importance of protecting Australia's oceans.
• Read a range of fiction and non-fiction texts connected to Earth and Space Sciences, marine ecosystems and environmental sustainability.
• Continue the Spelling Mastery program to build spelling accuracy and vocabulary knowledge.
• Participate in weekly partner fluency sessions using curriculum-related texts to improve reading accuracy, expression and confidence.
• Continue developing sentence fluency, grammar and writing conventions through explicit instruction and Daily Review.

Numeracy

Students will continue participating in explicit numeracy lessons that build mathematical understanding through modelling, guided practice and problem solving. Each lesson begins with our Daily Review to strengthen previously taught concepts. Students will also continue participating in Facts on Fire to build automatic recall of multiplication facts.

This term students will learn about:

• Fractions and decimals
• Multiplication and division strategies
• Measurement
• Angles
• Location and mapping skills
• Applying mathematical thinking to solve real-world problems

Unit of Inquiry

This term our integrated Unit of Inquiry explores sustainability, environmental responsibility and Australia's unique coastal environments. Through geography, science and ethical capabilities, students will investigate how people interact with marine environments and the importance of protecting them for future generations. Later in the term we will explore Earth and Space Sciences. 

Students will explore:

• Sustainability and environmental stewardship
• The geography and biodiversity of the Ningaloo Reef
• Comparing the Western Australian coastline with Victoria's coastline and marine environments
• The impact humans have on coastal ecosystems
• Ethical decision-making and how individuals can contribute to protecting the environment
• Earth and Space Sciences, investigating Earth's systems and natural processes

Homework

Homework will commence in Week 2.

Students are expected to:

• Read independently for 30–40 minutes, at least 5 nights per week
• Complete the weekly Solar System and Planet activities based on our Earth and Space Sciences Unit
• Complete at least two Essential Assessment tasks each week
• Complete any additional tasks connected to our classroom learning when required

Wellbeing

During Respectful Relationships lessons this term, students will continue developing the personal and social skills needed to build positive relationships and support their wellbeing. Topics include:

• Building positive relationships
• Managing emotions and challenges
• Respectful communication
• Seeking help and supporting others when needed
