Year 3/4 News

This term, our Year 3/4 students have been enthusiastically engaged in a range of rich learning experiences across Reading, Writing, Mathematics and Wellbeing.

In Reading, students have developed their comprehension skills by learning to identify character actions and explain what they reveal about a character. They have used evidence from texts to infer character traits and deepen their understanding of characters. More recently, students have explored persuasive texts by distinguishing between fact and opinion, and examining how authors share ideas and use persuasive language to influence and engage their audience.

In Writing, students began the term by learning about the structure of a recount and writing engaging orientations that introduced the key details of an event. They have now begun exploring persuasive writing, learning how persuasive language can be used to convince a particular audience. Students have started writing persuasive letters by introducing a clear request and supporting it with a strong, convincing first reason.

In Mathematics, students investigated number patterns by identifying and explaining the rule in a pattern and generating outputs using a given rule. They have since begun exploring measurement by developing their understanding of perimeter and area. Students are learning to measure the distance around shapes, compare the amount of space inside shapes, and apply these concepts to practical problem-solving activities.

During Wellbeing, students have been learning about recognising stress and understanding that everyone experiences stressful situations differently. They explored a range of positive self-calming strategies, including breathing exercises, relaxation techniques and the Slow-motion Giant Mirror Game, helping them build resilience and develop strategies to regulate their emotions both at school and at home.

This week, students also enjoyed participating in an exciting interactive livestream with Andy Griffiths to celebrate the launch of his new book, You & Me and the Gigantic Knucklehead. Students loved hearing about Andy's creative writing process, his inspiration for the story, and the importance of using imagination and humour in writing. It was a fantastic opportunity to inspire a love of reading, storytelling and creative thinking.

It has been wonderful to see our students continue to grow in confidence, curiosity and independence throughout the term. We are incredibly proud of their enthusiasm for learning and look forward to another exciting few weeks ahead!
