Dear Sacred Heart Community,

People often ask, what is the purpose of Catholic Education? Why do we have Catholic schools? What makes them different from other schools? Having taught in Catholic schools for the past 35 years, I would like to think that we are as relevant now as when I first started teaching. The Gospel values of Jesus Christ and the messages of peace, love, understanding, compassion and charity remain still, if not more, relevant than ever before. The displacement of peoples around the world through war, economics or natural disasters continues, as does our response. The parables of the Lost Sheep and the Good Samaritan both remind us of our duty and responsibilty to take care of our brothers and sisters, to look out for those in need, to simply Love One Another. 

The disaster in Nepal has come at considerable loss and grief. We too have been affected by this tragedy, with a number of our families from this magnificent part of the world. As a Catholic school, we wanted to do something as part of our response. I know students and classes have been praying for the people of Nepal and next week, on Friday 18th September, we will have a fundraiser to raise much needed funds to help the Nepalese people in their hour of need. That's what Catholic school do. 

MACSSIS Surveys ~ thanks for your help!

Each year around this time Melbourne Archdiocese Catholics Schools (MACS) send out surveys, asking students, staff and parents to contribute to school improvement by answering questions regarding school performance. These surveys are used by Leadership and staff to acknowledge the great work being done at Sacred Heart, as well as providing opportunities for growth. Your input is highly valued and eagerly sought. Thanks to the families that have submitted their responses. The closing date for the surveys in next Friday, 18th September.

Learning Support Officers ~                         Madeline Filopoulos and Janine Valentine

 This week we highlight the wonderful work done by these two important colleagues at our school. As Learning Support Officers, they work closely with individual students across the school. 

Janine has come to our school with a passion for sharing her knwledge of the deaf community. She has introduced Auslan (Sign Langauge) into the school and works with students from Foundation to Year 6, an extraordinary task. As well as this she has been a great support to Austin Archer and works closely with him every day. Thanks Janine for your dedication and hard work!

Madeline comes to our school every day with a big smile and a massive passion for what she does. When asked 'What's the best thing about being an LSO?' her response was 'I reckon it is getting to hang out with your favourite little people every day, and making sure that they learn at the same time, that's the best thing." When a student was asked why Maddy was such a good LSO, his response was simple ' Well cause she takes care of people'.  Thanks Maddy for your infectious personality and the enthusiasm your bring to the workplace. You make everyone at Sacred Heart feel good.
