Matthew 22:15–21 — Paying Taxes to the Emperor
The Pharisees wanted to trap Jesus with a question. They sent some of their followers, along with supporters of King Herod, to speak to him.
They said, “Teacher, we know you are honest and teach God’s way. Tell us: is it right to pay taxes to the Roman emperor?”
Jesus knew they were trying to trick him. He asked them why they were testing him and told them to show him a coin used to pay the tax.
They brought him a coin. Jesus asked whose face and name were on it.
They answered that they belonged to the emperor.
Jesus told them to give the emperor what belonged to the emperor, and to give God what belonged to God.
Summary
Some people tried to get Jesus into trouble by asking him about paying taxes. Jesus saw their plan and answered wisely.
This reading invites us to think about our responsibilities to others and to God. We have a part to play in our community, but we also belong to God. We give to God through our prayer, our choices and the love we show others.
Reflection Questions
1. How can I give God more of my time and attention during a busy week?
2. How can my choices at home, at work and in my community show God’s love?
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Loving God,
Thank you for the gift of life and for your constant love.
Help us to make wise and honest choices.
Guide us to fulfil our responsibilities with care and to make time for you each day.
May we see your image in every person and treat others with kindness and respect.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
