STEM Term 4

For this final term of the year, students will be working on ‘materials and technologies specialisations’, which is part of the Design and Technologies curriculum. Students will investigate a technology and will be planning, testing and prototyping a designed solution.
The Preps and Grade 1s are beginning the term learning about algorithms. They’ll understand that an algorithm is a set of sequenced instructions and apply this in both digital and non-digital scenarios. They’ll then be introduced to the design process and be constructing a stationary holder.
The Grade 2s and 3s students will explore how pop-up books engage readers through interactivity. They will investigate how different pop-up mechanisms work, and design and build their own pop-up page. They will learn about the mechanisms used in constructing pop-up books, designing pop-up pages that reflect a theme or story element and learn construction techniques to make pop-up mechanisms.
The Grade 4s, 5s and 6s are all working on the same topic, with some slight adjustments to suit their year levels. Over the term, students will investigate the components, rules and player experience of board games. Students will generate, prototype and refine a board game design to raise awareness for an environmental, economic or social issue.
