NMSS 2026

Recently, I had the opportunity to attend the National Mathematics Summer School, which was a 2-week residential camp in Canberra for students finishing Year 11. I met so many amazing fellow students and teachers there from across Australia, including the lecturers who lead lots of mathematical research. The school was focused around mathematics that was well beyond the Australian curriculum, including number theory, Latin squares, and projective planes, which provided insight into the sort of mathematics beyond a high school level. The other 8 hours of the day were spent participating in the school's social program, where I got to spend time with my new friends and explore Canberra. Many of these connections are truly important to me, and everybody there was friendly and shared many of the same interests. This experience has had a powerful impact on my future, and I now plan to study mathematics alongside my university studies
The school is most rewarding for those with a curiosity for maths and those who like to meet like-minded individuals. I attribute a great deal of my own curiosity to the UHS mathematics extension program, including all the competitions run by Mr Paatsch throughout the year, and they are a highlight of my time at UHS. I strongly encourage any mathematically curious Year 11s to apply for NMSS, and for everyone else to have a go at the competitions run at UHS!
