Intermediate Music Camp
On Monday 7th and Tuesday 8th September the students from Intermediate Band and Intermediate Jazz Ensemble took part in the BHS annual Music Camp at Angahook, Airey’s Inlet. It was an action- packed couple of days with intensive rehearsals and some fun outdoor activities such as Rock Climbing, Zip Lining, Giant Swing and Archery. Students also completed a night walk and afterwards had the best campfire singalong to date! Thanks so much to the music staff: Ms Moffatt, Mr Smith, Ms Humphrey, Ms Hunter and Mrs Linton, who helped to make the camp really successful. Thanks also to the parents who helped out with the BBQ cooking and problem-solved very quickly when the BBQ wouldn’t work! Congratulations to all the students who attended and made it a great camp this year.

VET ROCK THE PAC
Congratulations to the Year 1 VET Crew, who planned and ran the fabulous ‘Rock the PAC’ event last Wednesday.
All the BHS Year 7 Rockbands, the Year 8 bands and the House Band performed for family and friends, with stage management, MCing, sound mixing and promotion provided by the VET class. Many thanks to Ashleigh Hunter for her mentoring the students to put on such a great show, and to the Rockband staff Amanda Linton, Danniel Smith and Emma Moffatt for preparing their bands for this performance.
Last Monday VET Year 1 and Year 2 students performed at Oxygen Livespace, presenting their programs to a packed room. All groups really pulled out all the stops, with entertaining sets and great dialogue between numbers. A big shout out to Ed’s sister Harriet who filled in on vocals for her brother’s group at the last minute and sounded fabulous! Many thanks to Ashleigh Hunter and Megan McPherson for all their support on the night.
We wish our Second years every success for their VCE performance exams, which are coming up very quickly in the second week of Term 4.
Rosie Fuentes, Kale Walkeden and Willow Ganly have been selected to participate in the Songmaker’s Academy. This program sponsors students to attend a songwriting and producing program in Melbourne, working at recording studios across Collingwood: Rolling Stock Recording rooms, Carriage studio and Red Door Sounds. Each student is provided with all meals and accommodation for themselves and a guardian during the three -day program. 16 students were selected from all the students who participated in the Songmaker programs across Victoria in 2026, approximately 1, 400 from over 60 secondary schools.
It is so exciting to have three of our students accepted into this program, and we know these three students will have an amazing experience and bring lots of expertise back to share with us at BHS!
Students in Years 8-12 who are still hiring an instrument should consider purchasing their own instrument. We would like to offer the experience of learning an instrument to as many year 7 students as possible. In addition, many of our school hire instruments, such as clarinets, flutes, trombones and trumpets, are student models, without some of the features that enable students to produce the variety of techniques and tone required for senior level playing. If you are interested in purchasing the ‘next step’ instrument for your child, please contact your child’s instrumental teacher for advice on what to buy, where to buy, and above all brands to avoid!
TAKE NOTE JAZZ WORKSHOP
Last Friday music students from the jazz groups took part in a jazz improvisation workshop led by Take Note presenters, a program initiative that is part of the Melbourne international jazz festival. Students learnt about jazz articulations, and improvised with the professionals. Well done to all the students who listened so respectfully to presenters, and who were brave enough to experiment with the new concepts in their improvisations!
