LIBRARY EVENTS

We are looking forward to a visit from author and illustrator Gregg Dreise, June 26th.

Gregg is a gifted artist, storyteller and musician, and he features the didgeridoo and guitar in his performances at schools, libraries and festivals. He is a descendant of the Kamilaroi and Euahlayi people of south-west Queensland and north-west New South Wales.

He is the author and illustrator of Cunning Crow; Silly Birds; Kookoo Kookaburra; Mad Magpie and My Culture and Me. All these stories are about teaching morals. They address self-image, friendship, kindness, bullying and Indigenous culture.

Gregg will be conducting storytelling and illustrating workshops with the students.

Here are some of Gregg's books, which we will be enjoying over the next few weeks.

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK - Chess Excitement

Last week, to celebrate Catholic Schools Week, in the spirit of fostering friendship with students across our schools, a group of keen chess players from Yr 4 travelled to St Edwards School to participate in some friendly chess matches with pupils from McCarthy Catholic College, St Joseph's West Tamworth and St Edwards.

Thank you to Miss Maher for accompanying these students.

Thankyou also to St Edwards School for hosting the event.

Here are some responses from the students:

*It was great challenging other students in a game.

*I had an awesome time and everyone was really nice.

*I enjoyed the pizza and drinks that we got for lunch.

*I'm so thankful that I got the opportunity to go.

*It was fun meeting up with friends from other schools and making new friends.

*I liked that the games were "friendlies" with no pressure to win.

*It was fun visiting a different school for a few hours.

Please note a LIBRARY BAG is the first item on your child's equipment list for the year.

Thank you for ensuring your child has a library bag. I have some spares and will issue these to students next week who have not yet presented with a bag.

This quote was submitted on a library leader application back in 2016.

Abbey explained that the library is not just book shelves laden with books. The library is full of ideas and adventures and opportunities to learn something new, to try something new, maybe to meet someone new.

Next week I will be unpacking this idea as we embark on our reading journey.

Children’s Book Week / 16–23 August 2025

This year the theme is "BOOK AN ADVENTURE"

The Children's Book Council Of Australia celebrates 80 years of Children's Book Week this year, a marvellous milestone of connecting children to story. In the following weeks, we will have lots of fun discussing this theme and how it relates to our reading journey. I look forward to hearing some wonderful insights from the students.

EARLY BIRDS READING CLUB - Change of time

Early Birds has now moved to the 1st break time slot.

Before school, students are now welcome to come in and chat with friends, draw, play chess, do a jigsaw, enjoy the comfortable ambience of a warm space and of course to read.

Ask your child about the bookmark which provides home access for World eBooks and Worldbook online.

If you have not logged on and had a browse around, sit down with your child and ask them about it. I'm sure all primary-aged students will be able to show you some of the features.

Download the free App to access this online reading resource provided for us by the Catholic Schools Office. Your family will have access to thousands of books 24/7.

Sora - get free ebooks and audiobooks from your school.

Step 1: Install Sora app from Apple App Store or Google Play Store, or soraapp.com.

Step 2: When in Sora, click on CONTINUE then I have a setup code.

(Do not click on “Find My School”)

Step 3: The “setup” code is cenetau

Step 4: Click on ACEN (the top bar), click again.

Step 5:Student signs in with school username and password.

Student may then EXPLORE all the options eg ebooks and audio books available.

Select Open book or Open audiobook to read or listen to the book.
Select Options to renew or return the book, see your notes and highlights, and more.
