Year 6

Year 6 enjoyed welcoming all our Mother’s and special visitors to school for our Mother’s Day celebration a few weeks ago. It was so special to have so many visitors to celebrate their final Mother’s Day event at St Nicholas.

The Stage 3 Public speaking competition has taken place over the first half of this term with a round in each class, followed by a grade semi final and then the final taking place last week. A huge congratulations to Jacob Anderson who received Highly Commended, Runner Up Alexis Bartlet and Georgia King who was awarded 1st Place. We are very proud of our Year 5 and 6 students who all wrote, prepared and rehearsed their speeches.

In English this term we have been focused on persuasive writing and we began by looking at the ways advertisers persuade us to purchase. Students then went on to create their own advertisements on a product of choice. We are now moving onto writing our expositions and discussions focusing on using the correct structure, high modality work choices and evidence to make our arguments persuasive.

Our Creative Arts focus for this term is Drama and we have been absolutely amazed by the energy, enthusiasm and engagement of many of our students. We have some very confident performers amongst our students and were impressed by students performing monologues last week. The next few weeks will see students preparing a short readers theatre performance in small groups.

Year 4

Year 4 History Excursion to Wallabadah First Fleet Memorial Garden

Year 4 students recently ventured to Wallabadah to visit the First Fleet Memorial Garden. This fantastic historical source links directly to our ‘Journeys of the First Fleet’ unit of work.

After having some lunch, students were able to explore the garden and its many features. Many students were able to find their own surname which they share with a convict from the First Fleet, discover that the centre garden is in the shape of Australia and find interesting facts that confirm what they have been learning in class or extend this knowledge.

The real fun began when the scavenger hunt was introduced! Students were tasked with answering a range of questions based on the First Fleet and Second Fleet sections of the garden. All information was provided somewhere in the gardens and students had to locate and decipher information to complete their questions. Students were praised for how well they worked together in pairs to uncover the answers. There were many cheers of success when the official answers were revealed.

Students returned to school for a relaxing afternoon of First Fleet and convict themed crosswords, word finds and colourings. This excursion was a great day of fun, exploring and learning about the journey of the First Fleet for the Year 4 team!
