Mordialloc College Year 7s Battle Hard at Herald Sun Shield Finals
On Wednesday, September 10, the Mordialloc College Year 7 Boys' AFL team showcased their talent and determination on a massive stage, competing in the prestigious Herald Sun Shield finals at Footscray Park. Run by AFL Victoria, this event brings together the best of the best, with every competing school having earned their place by winning their respective regional finals.
Our boys entered the day with confidence and got off to a blistering start, demonstrating the skill and teamwork that saw them dominate their regional competition. In the opening round, they secured a hard-fought 8.5.53 to 6.1.37 victory over Damascus College. They carried that momentum into the next two matches, triumphing over Luther College with a 6.3.39 to 5.1.31 win and delivering a commanding 8.2.50 to 4.1.24 performance against Carey Grammar.
After three consecutive wins, the team faced the top-tier competition in the final rounds. They met a formidable Ballarat High School, narrowly going down 6.3.39 to 8.2.50 in a high-quality contest. The final match of the day was against the eventual tournament winners, Patterson River SC, where our boys fought bravely but were defeated 6.4.40 to 9.5.59.
While the entire team contributed to the successful day, there were several standout performances. Up forward, Frankie Story was a dominant force, kicking an incredible 18 goals across the tournament. In the middle, Josh Willemsen's excellent ball movement as a ruck/utility gave the team a crucial advantage, while Blake Syme showed great composure to consistently find targets. The back line was equally impressive, with Axel Brownfield, Ethan Mazzoletti, and Bailey Cipriano's tireless efforts and crucial intercept marking preventing numerous opposition scores.
The team's outstanding efforts throughout the day saw them finish in a highly commendable third place overall. Finishing in the top three at a state-level final is a testament to the team's hard work, resilience, and growth throughout the program. The entire Mordialloc College community is incredibly proud of their sportsmanship and the way they represented our school with pride. Congratulations to all the players on a fantastic tournament!
