The HOL Times journalists have interviewed HOL Café participants from year 9 to gauge their thoughts and feelings about being in the café program.  Here is what they have to say.

Anonymous New student, year 9

What made you want to join the program?

All my friends seemed happy when it was their day to go to HOL and I wanted to try. I helped at The Biggest Morning Tea and joined the program soon after.

When did you join the café?

Term 2 this year.

How has the program affected your attitude towards school?

It helped me complete my classwork and it gave me something to look forward to at the end of the week. 

Have you enjoyed your time here?

I enjoy my time a lot because I can relax and think about other stuff.

Has the café improved your confidence/social skills?

It improved them a lot because I have learnt to not be scared to talk to people and ask for help from others.

What skills have you learnt in the café?

I learnt how to manage money payments and how to cut stuff safely.

How has the café improved your cooking skills?

I have learnt how to use different types of tools.

What’s your favourite thing to do in the café?

Get to know who I am working with in the café.

Caitlin, Year 9

What made you want to join the program?

My Mum heard of the café program and told me about it. I thought that it was something fun and something new to try 

When did you join the café?

Around three years ago, 2022. I was in year 7.

How has the program affected your attitude towards school?

I get more excited to come to school on my Hol Café days and there is something new and exciting to look forward to each week. 

Have you enjoyed your time here?

Yes!

Has the café improved your confidence/social skills?

A lot. I used to be really shy and bad at talking to people but the customer service training has helped me talk to people. It has also improved my confidence to be able to stand up for myself.

What skills have you learnt in the café?

I have learnt to properly use the coffee machine, baking techniques and other cooking skills. Unfortunately, cleaning also.

How has the café improved your cooking skills?

I have gotten more confident in the kitchen. I am more comfortable using the stoves and knives.

What’s your favourite thing to do in the café?

I like doing the coffee shots. It is easy and I find it calming.
