Year 3

This term in Grade 3 we have been busy with lots of fun and interesting activities. To celebrate Science week, parents came in to help us make ice cream. We measured the ingredients, shook the bags, and got to eat the ice cream we made. It was delicious.

We had an Anti-Bullying Week incursion where we learnt how to be kind, include others, and stand up for people if they need help. It made us think about how to make our school a happy place for everyone. The incursion, Backflips Against Bullying was so funny!!

Book Week was one of our favourite weeks. We had a big parade and dressed up as our favourite book characters. Everyone looked amazing. We also had a treasure hunt incursion. Shared reading with our buddy class was lots of fun too. We enjoyed reading to them and listening to their stories.

In class we have been reading Brindabella by Ursula Dubosarsky and talking about the characters and what happens in the story. In humanities we are creating our own countries with flags, maps, and special features. In maths we have been learning about 3D shapes and practising multiplication to help us with problem solving.

It has been a great term and we can’t wait to see what we will do next.

We are proud of all our students' efforts, positive mindsets and look forward to acknowledging and celebrating their accomplishments with them throughout these units.

Year 4

We have already made it more than halfway through the term and it's also officially camp week for the grade 4s! As we prepare for our very first school camp experience, this is what has been happening in the year 4 space.

In reading, we have come to the end of our text study unit of the book ‘Leo and Ralph’. Students are still exploring comprehensive techniques to understand what the author is conveying. We have observed many different literary devices throughout the book with lots of personification, metaphors and similes. Students have also been working on their reading goals through thinking tracks and conferencing.

In writing, students have been using their skills across both English subjects to plan out creative narratives. There have been many stories being written with interesting characters, detailed settings and lots of problems to solve. Students are becoming the perfect storytellers through their writing!

In maths, students have been exploring 2D and 3D dimensions. They have been able to differentiate between prisms and pyramids as well as discover 2D shapes within 3D objects. Students are also delving deeper into multiplication and division strategies. Their most recent strategy is the area method. Students have found this challenging but satisfying to work out!

In humanities, students continue discovering different parts of the world through the continents. With the knowledge they have acquired from their learning they have begun creating their own map. They will need to consider their own climate zone, own wildlife, ecosystem and how the people will survive.

In science, we had our open classroom, where we had special visitors to help us bring our learning to life. Students chose a living plant and designed the life cycle of the plant on paper, using, any different arts and crafts. Thank you to our families who attended, the children loved having you all there with the.

The grade 3’s – 6’s were happy to be able to witness the performance by ‘Backflips against Bullying’. There were lots of “ooohs” and “ahhhhs” from the students and lot of learning about how to be a good friend and to stand up to bullying.

We are very excited to go to camp and cannot wait to share everything camp related soon!

Please ensure to check your compass posts for the ‘What to Pack’ list so as not to forget anything.

Year 5

Reading

Students have begun to read the story Black Cockatoo as part of their text study. Throughout the story, students are being introduced to new vocabulary through Aboriginal language. Black Cockatoo is a vignette that follows Mia, a young Aboriginal girl as she explores the fragile connections of family and culture. Students will create summaries for the chapters as we read and explore Mia’s connections to family and culture.

Writing

In Writing, students are starting to explore how to write an expository text. Students will be learning how to construct an expository text by looking at descriptions, order and sequence, causes and effects, comparing as well as problems and solutions. Students will be exploring the different types of expository texts and their purposes.

Mathematics

Our focus in Mathematics has been on finding equivalent fractions by using visuals and by multiplying by common factors. Students have used these skills to assist them in adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominators and different denominators. The students have been looking at lines of symmetry in our Maths Space unit. Students have been identifying how to identify the lines of symmetry in 2D shapes.

Science

In Science, the cohort went to Scienceworks for our first excursion for the year. Students spent time exploring the general viewing areas of the venue creating their own digital energy efficient cars, how renewable energy is created and even racing against Cathy Freeman. The cohort all observed the Lightning Room show learning about different types of energy. Students observed multiple experiments showing how energy can be created. It was a great day and all the students had a blast.

Kind regards,

Year 6

So far, this term has been super fun, jam-packed with learning and experiences! Check out what we have been up too!

In English, we have been learning about the Historical Fiction gene by exploring how writer’s use events from the past to convey themes and messages. During our class novel study of ‘Once’ and now the sequel ‘Then’, we have investigated the use of emotive language and practicing how to respond to discussion questions using the R.A.C.E strategy. We have begun to study the non-fiction genre of Expository writing by examining the different paragraph types and then applying our knowledge of these to write paragraphs about the Atomic Bomb Dome in Japan.

In Maths, we have been learning to solve problems involving fractions. We have been diving into using multiple strategies when solving equivalence, addition or subtraction problems, even playing some boardgames to help us discuss strategies when solving problems. We have also been talking about how we use fractions in the real-world to solve problems through worded problems.

In other news, we have been super busy this term! We have versed each other in the house dodgeball competition, tried our best in the state mathematics competition, invited our parents into the classroom to experiment with circuits, caught up with our prep buddies, and we also celebrated book week!

It was fantastic to see everyone make such a great effort to dress up as their favourite character.

We also took part in a shared reading experience with a younger grade, which allowed us to interact and discuss the Book Week theme of ‘Book an Adventure’ with them.

Something we are looking forward to for the rest of this term is round 2 of the dodgeball competition, RUOK? Day activities, the colour fun run and of course CAMP!
