Marketing Maneuvers Incursion

Wants & Needs

On Tuesday, 6A attended an incursion called Market Maneuvers. At the start, Sarah invited one of the students up to participate in a game where she had to learn how to balance her wants and needs with the money she received. She had to go to work and she earned $600 from building with legos. She then had to budget her money between mortgage, groceries, taxes, bills and the things she wanted to buy which was a sports car. It taught me that in life you need to know how you have to ensure your needs are covered financially before your wants.

The Buyer (Game Role)

In the lego game, I had the role of the buyer. When the round began, I had to go get legos from the supplier which cost us a different amount of money each round. I went back and forth from the supplier to my team to provide them with legos. Once the legos on the table started to build up, I began helping my team to make some of the houses. As the bricks started to get low, I ran and got our cup and continued to buy our legos from the supplier. Once the one minute warning came on, we knew we had to start distributing the brick houses we made between either city, beaches and mountains. As the round came to an end, I went behind the supplier to calculate how much money we had spent while the consumer viewed how many houses we built in each area. We finished with a score of 372 which was the highest out of all the groups.

Taxes

We learned what taxes are and how a percentage of our income is given to the government. We pay taxes so we can easily access our needs like hospitals, shops and schools. For example, you go to work and receive money from work but we pay taxes before we can access the money for our wants and needs.

Income is essential to fulfilling society

One thing I learned at the incursion was how to limit my spending. Another thing I learnt was how to use my money to fulfill my needs. The last thing I was wanting to think about is that we need to work for our wants and needs, however our income and work can also fulfill someone else's wants and needs.

The Consumer (Game Role)

The teams had to build houses and sort them into three categories that included the beach, the city and the mountains, which changes the value of each house depending on its rarity. One challenging thing for my team was that when I counted the houses there were less as the build got harder, especially in round two with the crisscross design and round three with the spiral design. Doing this role, I learnt the importance of having a budget since you need it to buy bricks to produce houses. This could help me with my mini fete project because it taught me how to manage money and resources.

The Builder (Game Role)

We used our experience to guide our team to victory and if someone didn't know how to build something you would have told people how to understand and build it. The most challenging thing for our team was at the start of round two  building the crisscross design, most people needed help and it was pretty stressful seeing other teams building but towards the end we got it miraculously and our team won round two. During this role, I learnt how to work as a team and this could help me with my mini fete project because we can collaborate as a team and help each other to sell the most product.

Making A Profit

At the incursion, we learnt that profit is the amount of money you make after you cover your costs. However, before you sell the legos to your customers you also have to pay taxes to the government, pay the workers, and also pay for the legos that you used to sell to your customers and make profit out of it. Businesses can also affect the pricing that you want to sell it for because you need to make profit out of the stuff you sell, so you have to think about how you can increase the pricing more.

The Supplier (Game Role)

My role was a supplier and the thing that worked best in my role was every round near the end I would do small discounts to higher my sales. The most challenging part about my role was when others were getting sales, I wasn't getting much sales until near the end because they were busy building instead of buying bricks. As a supplier I learnt that every now and then I got more money by doing small discounts. This taught me that if prices are unreasonable then most of the sales will drop more than cheaper items.
