MENTAL STRATEGIES
Over the past two weeks children in the Junior school have been focusing on the following mental strategies at school. The seniors are continuing to work on the strategies introduced in Weeks 5 & 6.
| YEAR LEVEL | STRATEGY and SUGGESTIONS FOR PRACTICING AT HOME |
| Foundation | Partitions of 2,3,4 What are the different number combinations we can use to make 2,3,and 4? 3+1. 2+2, 2+1, 1+1 etc
|
| Year 1 | Number – skip count by 2’s and 5’s from 0 Children practice skip counting by 2’s and 5’s, starting at 0 or if feeling confident they can begin at any number.
|
| Year 2 | Near Doubles- The near doubles strategy is a mental math technique used to solve addition problems by building on known doubles facts.
For example, to solve 4 + 5:
|
| Year 3 | Adding and Subtracting to and from a decuple What is a decuple? In very basic Maths terms a decuple is a group of 10 or the next group of 10 or 10 more. So when we add to or subtract from a decuple, we are either adding to or taking away from a group of 10, say 40 or 30 etc.
For example to practise this, ask your child to add or take away a number between 1-9 to or from a decuple.
For example: 30+6 90 - 5 40 +7 80 - 4 130+ 3 120 - 6 80+7 50 - 9
|
| Year 4 & 5 | Doubling & Halving strategy for Multiplication Halving is the inverse of doubling.
|
| Year 6 | Count by decimals- forwards or backwards. Start at any decimal number e.g. 0.2 and count forwards or backwards. E.g - 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and so on - 0.2, 0.3,0.4, 0.5, 0.6 and so on - 0.2, 0.5, 0.8, 1.1, 1.4 and so on - 2.4, 2.2, 2, 1.8, 1.6, 1.4, and so on |

Our Clinic 3 Writing students have been working hard on learning to write explanations. Last week, we focused on the phases of the Moon, linking our learning to our current Inquiry topic of Systems.
Through our investigations, students discovered that the Moon does not produce its own light; instead, it reflects light from the Sun. We also learned that it takes approximately 28–29 days for the Moon to orbit Earth, a process known as the lunar cycle. Students explored how the Moon's appearance changes throughout this cycle and developed their understanding of the patterns we observe in the night sky.
This week, we extended our learning by creating dioramas to represent the phases of the Moon. Students demonstrated creativity, scientific understanding and strong communication skills as they explained their models to their peers.
We are proud of the curiosity, teamwork and enthusiasm our students have shown throughout this unit.
