Ensuring our students are as safe

Ensuring our students are as safe as can be….anywhere in the world

Nossal is a school that supports our students getting out and about in the community and wider afield. A lot of work is done behind the scenes to make sure they are safe in any environment. To this end we have purchased two portable single use AED’s (Automated External Defibrillator) and a Zoleo device.

An AED means that if a student has a cardiac arrest outside the school environment, we can use the device to hopefully get the heart started again. A cardiac arrest can happen for many reasons and rarely occur when an AED is nearby, for example, when travelling to and from events. These AED are different from the ones you see on the wall in supermarkets and that we have at school etc as they are small, light and single use. The device gives full instructions for the teacher to follow. This device will give anyone having a medical episode vital extra time until paramedics can arrive.

We have also purchased a Zoleo, which is a communication device that means that our staff will always have the ability to contact emergency services even when there is no phone signal. It uses the Iridium Network of satellites and will work all over the world. It has a button that, when pressed, signals that we need emergency support and we need it now, along with our GPS, or the option to just get medical advice. It also allows us to text anyone using a mobile phone so we can even contact parents from the middle of the bush.

We will be using these on excursions like Duke of Edinburgh, Year 9 Camp at Roses Gap, sports excursions and the Central Australian Tour where phone reception will be limited or where an AED is not accessible easily.
