Message from the College Principal

Hi everyone, our college Principal, Anthony Rodaughan, is currently in China on a whirlwind trip representing Kurnai and strengthening our connections with schools and families that send international students to study with us. I am acting principal in his absence.

Many events have taken place or are about to happen, as described below and throughout the newsletter. We thank all the incredible staff who have organised and run them. We also thank the students for the positive manner in which they participate and represent our college. We regularly receive feedback on how well our students engage in these events.

Term 4 is also traditionally the time when we recognise students' achievements over the year, and we have many ceremonies planned across all campuses to acknowledge our students' efforts. Please take note of the key dates section of this newsletter to ensure you are aware of when relevant events are occurring.

As well as concluding classes for semester 2, campus teams are also busy preparing for our Headstart program where we begin preparing students for 2025. This is an important part of our program and aids in a smooth start at the beginning of next year.

This week, we had our Year 12 Celebration Day. They have finished formal classes and are preparing for their next steps, whether that be exams, joining the workforce, or preparing for further education. A great day was had by all who came dressed in a variety of costumes. They enjoyed a cooked breakfast together before engaging in a couple of hours of fun activities, culminating in a colour run. We will farewell them more formally later in the year.

We wish all our students sitting exams in the next few weeks all the very best.

Acting College Principal

KYPP 10-Year Reunion

Since 2014, the Kurnai Young Parents Program has provided a secure and adaptable learning environment for young parents under 21, helping them complete their schooling while balancing the responsibilities of parenthood.

The recent 10-year reunion was a wonderful celebration of 10 years of KYPPs, a celebration of inspirational young women who, despite the demands of being a young parent, chose to make a better future for themselves and their children through education.

Athletics

Last term, a small but talented group of Kurnai College students competed against the best student-athletes this side of Melbourne's metropolitan areas at the Gippsland Track and Field Carnival at Joe Carmody Reserve Newborough.

Congratulations to Alyssa Cormack (YR9), who placed first in the high jump, Amira Moss (YR7), placing second in the shot put, and Skylah Russell (YR8), placing third in the shot put.

Alyssa qualified for the Victorian State Championships, held at the Lakeside Stadium at Albert Park, where she represented Kurnai College on Monday. She had a tough competition against the best high jump students for her age group in the state, placing 5th. Kurnai College is exceptionally proud of Alyssa and her achievements.

Congratulations Alyssa and all the athletes who have represented Kurnai College this year across various Interschool sporting events.

Kurnai Aspiring Athletes Program

Kurnai College, in partnership with Gippsland Sports Academy, launched the Kurnai Aspiring Athlete Program at the beginning of Term 3.

The program aims to increase opportunities for identified students to engage in a tailored strength and conditioning program that supports young athletes pursuing sporting excellence while building confidence, communication and leadership skills to take their performance in their chosen sport to the next level.

Applications for next year's intake will open on Monday 28th October and are due Friday 6th of December.

Students who wish to apply need to contact Jeff Derkacs (Morwell Campus) or Paris Werner (Churchill Campus).
