Basketball Academy

On June 12, our HSBN students had the opportunity to visit Parliament House Victoria for an educational and inspiring day of learning.

Students enjoyed a guided tour of Parliament, shared lunch together, and had the chance to sit in on proceedings in the Legislative Council. Throughout the visit, they learned how laws are created, how voting works, and how decisions are made across local, state, and federal levels of government.

The students also discussed issues affecting their own communities and explored how individuals can contribute to positive change. The experience provided valuable insight into the democratic process and helped students understand that their voices matter.

By the end of the day, students left with a greater appreciation of how government works and a stronger belief that they can play an active role in shaping the future of their communities.

RMIT Girls in STEM

The RMIT Future STEM Leaders program empowers Year 9 and 10 girls to build leadership skills while exploring STEM careers. This year, the focus was surveying. On Day 1, students developed their leadership capabilities and practised using professional tools, including range finders, laser measures, total stations, and 3D laser scanners. On Day 2, they stepped up to run rotation activities, teaching Year 7s how to operate the equipment and apply it in the field. It was fantastic to see students across different year levels collaborating so positively.

Badminton 

On Thursday the 4th of June, our Year 7, Year 8 and Year 9/10 Boys Badminton Teams competed in the Divisional Round Robin Tournament at Collingwood College. The Year 7 Team played against Glenroy College. The Year 7 team finished runners up.

The Year 8 team played in a round robin tournament against Glenroy College, Collingwood College and John Fawkner. The Year 8 team finished in equal third position.

The Year 9/10 team played in a round robin tournament against Glenroy College, Collingwood College A team and Collingwood College B team. The Year 9/10 finished in equal second position.

The CHS Badminton Teams demonstrated excellent sportspersonship and their individual skill level and knowledge of the game developed throughout the tournament. Their support for each other was truly fantastic to see and they encouraged each other to play some high quality Badminton against some really tough opposition. Well done to each of the teams!!

VCE Visual Communication Design

On Tuesday 21st  April, our Year 11 and 12 VCE Visual Communication Design students enjoyed an inspiring day exploring contemporary design and innovation in Melbourne.

The excursion began at the NGV Australia at Federation Square, where students attended the Design Culture and Innovation floor talk. This engaging session provided valuable insights into the role of designers in responding to social, cultural and technological change, and highlighted how innovative thinking influences the products, systems and experiences that shape our everyday lives. Students engaged with design artifacts across the fields of design and gained insights into our first nations designers’ unique perspectives. 

Students then travelled to Melbourne Museum to participate in the Top Designs Visual Communication Design Forums. Presented by past high-achieving students and design professionals, the forum offered practical advice and first-hand experiences about the VCE design process. Students gained a deeper understanding of effective folio development, creative problem-solving and strategies for success in Visual Communication Design. 

The day provided an excellent opportunity for students to connect classroom learning with real-world design practice, while gaining inspiration from the work and experiences of others. We look forward to seeing how these ideas and insights influence their own design projects throughout the year.

A special thank you to Merinda Ries who accompanied the excursion and helped make the day such a valuable learning experience.

Year 7 Boys AFL

The Year 7 Boys AFL team has booked its place in the NMR Finals after an outstanding undefeated day of competition.

The team opened with a dominant 48–2 victory over AIA. Coach Seb praised the boys' composure, ball use, effort and integrity, saying that every player contributed strongly to the result.

In the second match, CHS defeated Glenroy 16–9 in a hard-fought contest. Strong communication and relentless pressure around the ball helped the boys hold their nerve and secure another important win.

The team finished the day in style with a commanding 66–1 victory over Al Siraat, completing a perfect campaign and advancing to the next stage of the competition.

Congratulations to all players on a fantastic team performance. Thanks also to the parents and grandparents who came to watch, including Jackson Rs mum for supplying the lollies! We wish the boys the best of luck in the NMR Finals!

Year 8 Girls Soccer

Fantastic job from the Year 8 Girls Soccer team. We represented the school incredibly well both on and off the field, finishing the day undefeated with 8-0, 11-0, 7-0 and 1-0 results. Everyone should be proud of their efforts. We will go out for the next round in Term 3,  let's do it all again!

Year 11 and 12 VCE Spanish

On Tuesday 23rd of June, our senior Spanish students had the wonderful opportunity to participate in a flamenco excursion to Hogar Español (The Spanish Club) in Fitzroy. A huge thank you to Dani and Caterina, who delivered an engaging and energetic masterclass where students learnt how to dance sevillanas, tocar las palmas (clap to the rhythm) and even try singing some traditional flamenco.

It was fantastic to see students so involved throughout the experience: asking questions in Spanish, embracing new challenges and connecting with the language beyond the classroom. To finish the day, students enjoyed sharing paella and Spanish tapas while socialising across year levels and strengthening our language community.

A special thank you to Luis Murillo, whose generosity helped us secure the venue free of charge and made this experience possible.

We are looking forward to creating more collaborative opportunities like this in the future. Language learning is so much more than vocabulary and grammar, it is about meeting people, building connections, sharing experiences and developing a sense of community.

Year 7 Celebration Day – A Fantastic Finish to Semester One

Our Year 7 students wrapped up their first semester at Coburg High School with a day full of celebration, culture, sport and reflection.

The highlight of the morning was an energetic African Drumming and Dancing workshop. Students threw themselves into the experience, enthusiastically learning new rhythms, movements and cultural traditions. The room was filled with laughter, music and plenty of smiles as students embraced the opportunity to try something different together.

To add to the excitement, the afternoon saw the Year 7 cohort come together to support the Socceroos. Classrooms were transformed into mini fan zones, with students creating posters, streaming the match and cheering on Australia in a fantastic display of school spirit.

We finished the day by celebrating the many achievements of our Year 7 students throughout their first semester. Students reflected on the goals they have achieved, the challenges they have overcome and the progress they have made since starting secondary school. It was wonderful to acknowledge not only academic success, but also the resilience, friendships, confidence and personal growth that so many students have demonstrated.

A special congratulations goes to 7J, who finished the semester with the highest number of Green Compass entries across the Year 7 cohort. Their consistent display of our school values has earned them a well-deserved pizza lunch, which they will enjoy early in Term 3.

Congratulations to all of our Year 7 students on a fantastic first semester. We are incredibly proud of everything they have achieved and look forward to seeing them continue to grow and thrive in Semester 2.
