Anthology Launch

On Tuesday 26 May, the Anthology Team officially launched the 2025 Anthology. Addressing the audience of Year 7 classes, award recipients, and their parents, the team opened the event with an acknowledgment of country and recognition of the day as National Sorry Day. Also, in honour of the day, the EHS choir sang a First Nations lullaby in the language of the Yorta Yorta people.

Our guest speaker this year was Kate Mildenhall – local author and Eltham High alumni. She had even brought in copies of anthologies from her own time as a member of the team and spoke about these experiences as formative in her writing career. Kate spoke passionately about the importance of young people sharing their voices and stories, especially at a time when authentic, original writing is under threat in this time of AI.  In period 3, Kate also ran a writing workshop for our award recipients and Anthology Team that was very well received. Every one of us left inspired!

We also used the event to launch our short story competition for 2026. In honour of our centenary, we are asking students to write 100 word short stories. 100 word stories are often called micro-fiction or flash fiction. They have all the elements of a longer story – character, point of view, setting, dialogue, conflict, a beginning, middle and end etc. but are told in only 100 words. Your story can be about anything – there’s no theme – you just need to stick to the word limit. It’s a really fun writing challenge, so give it a go!

Entries can be sent via Mel’s email: melanie.gaylard@education.vic.gov.au Or via your English teachers who can pass them on to the Anthology Team.
