Classroom Learning Update

Reading

In Reading, we have continued our class novel study of The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo. Students have enjoyed following Despereaux's journey while exploring how authors use language and literary devices to engage readers.

Our learning has focused on identifying the features of an effective setting and understanding cause-and-effect relationships within the story. Students have examined how the setting influences characters, mood, and events, while also analysing how one event can lead to another. 

Writing

In Writing, we recently completed our unit on fables. Students explored the characteristics of this text type and created their own imaginative fables, each featuring an important moral or lesson.

We have now begun our diary writing unit, where students are learning to write from a personal perspective by sharing thoughts, feelings, and reflections about events. A key focus has been the use of conjunctions and connectives such as while, although, and therefore to improve the flow and cohesion of their writing. 

Mathematics

In Mathematics, we have been completing our unit on Time through a variety of hands-on and interactive activities. Students have strengthened their understanding of reading and calculating time by participating in time task races, time bingo, and a range of elapsed-time problem-solving challenges.

A particular highlight was our cup stacking races, where students recorded their times and used their addition and subtraction skills to convert seconds into minutes. 

We are incredibly proud of the effort, enthusiasm, and persistence students have demonstrated across all learning areas and look forward to sharing more of their learning and achievements in the coming weeks. 

Music

In Music, students have been learning about rhythm by exploring ta, ti-ti, and za in 4/4 time. Through a variety of clapping, speaking, and movement activities, students practised recognising and performing different rhythmic patterns while developing their sense of beat and timing.
