Years 3 - 5

In Maths, students have been learning about money. We have been focusing on representing amounts in different ways using coins and notes, adding total amounts, and calculating change. This learning is highly practical and supports real-life situations such as using the canteen at weekend trips to the footy.

In Sport, we have begun our badminton unit. Students have been developing key skills such as using short, sharp flicks of the racket and learning to control the shuttlecock using their wrist rather than their whole arm. We started with a balloon activity to practise control and accuracy, which proved more challenging than first expected. Students then progressed to using a shuttlecock, practising continuous hits through juggling. We finished the session with a game of elimination, where students took turns running in to return the shuttlecock and keep it in play.

Over the coming weeks, we will train and prepare for the upcoming Lightning Premierships on Tuesday August 18th. Students are already showing great enthusiasm and excitement.

In Art, students recently completed their hot air balloon artworks, which turned out beautifully. This week, we began a new unit exploring Australian landmarks, starting with the Sydney Opera House. Students were guided through a step-by-step drawing process to create a 3D representation. Next week, they will enhance their work by adding patterns using oil pastels and creating a watercolour background, resulting in a mixed media piece. Students will also select a piece they are proud of to enter in the upcoming Coleraine Art and Photography Show, taking place on August 15th and 16th at the Mechanics Hall in Coleraine.
