Kitchen Garden

Over the last two weeks we have been as busy as ever. Last week Year F-2 used rhubarb from our garden plus apples from Mrs Bell’s tree to make rhubarb and apple crumble. Lots of peeling and chopping skills were practiced and Barbara demonstrated the technique of ‘rubbing in ‘ butter to dry mix for the crumble.

The whole school enjoyed a serve of it with ice cream in the afternoon.

Year 3-5s had a busy morning painting plant signs, kindly made by the fantastic fellas at our local Men’s Shed. They then made lots of newspaper plant pots, ready for some Spring seedlings to go into.  After that we did a lot of work in the garden, weeding and mulching and discussing the need to work together to get less enjoyable, but necessary jobs done.

This week, Year F-2 worked in the garden, planting some celery, beetroot, bok choy, spring onions and leeks. They are getting much better at the tricky technique of carefully separating seedlings and planting them without damaging the fragile roots.

Meanwhile, Years 3-5 were cooking a roasted vegetable frittata. We also used vegetable and herbs from the garden to make this healthy and tasty lunch.  Good and safe cutting skills were being practiced once again with a large amount of vegetables to be cut. Cracking the eggs was also a very popular part of the activity.  Will cracked a double yolker.
