Level 1 & 2

Welcome back to Term 3!
We are so excited to be back at it in Grade one and two. Starting strong with gymnastics this Thursday and the students are so excited for the upcoming Melbourne Zoo excursion in week 3!
INFORMATION & REMINDERS
Personal Belongings:
We are seeing an increase in personal belongings like footy cards, teddies, remote controlled cars and toys being bought to school. We strongly encourage students to leave these items at home as at times they can cause distress when they become lost or damaged and can distract students from learning time.
Permission and Payment:
Just a reminder to please check that you have given permission and payment for the upcoming excursions. You can check on Sentral for any you might have missed.
CURRICULUM
Literacy
UFLI: Grade One Students
This week, Grade One students will be learning the spelling patterns tch and ch for the /ch/ sound. They will also learn dge as a spelling pattern for the /j/ sound.
UFLI: Grade Two Students
This week, Grade Two students will be learning that ea can represent different vowel sounds and that the letter a can make the /o/ sound in some words. They will also learn the spelling patterns oi and oy for the /oi/ sound.
What can you do at home?
- Optional UFLI Home Practice pages found in their home learning book.
Mentor Text: The Variety of Life
Students will begin exploring our new CBL topic of Power with the book The Variety of Life by Nicola Davies and Lorna Scobie. Students will investigate the features of a non-fiction text, including the contents page, headings, photographs, captions, and glossary. They will also build their vocabulary by learning and using new topic words from the text.
What can you do at home?
Choose a plant, animal, or insect you can find at home, in your garden, or on a walk. Encourage your child to describe it using as many interesting adjectives as they can. Then ask questions such as:
- What do you notice about it?
- Where do you think it lives?
- Why do you think it looks or behaves that way?
If you have access to non-fiction books or child-friendly websites, help your child look up one new fact about their chosen living thing and share it with the family.
Maths
Grade One Students
This week, Grade One students will begin exploring length. They will compare and measure the length of objects and shapes using informal units, investigate why using the same unit is important, and learn how different informal units can affect measurements.
What can you do at home?
- Continue using MathsSeeds.
- Find objects around the house and compare their lengths using informal units such as blocks, paperclips, or toy cars.
- Ask your child to estimate which object is longer before measuring, then check their prediction by measuring with the same informal unit.
Grade Two Students
This week, Grade Two students will begin exploring multiplication and division. They will investigate how doubling can help solve multiplication problems, write repeated addition equations, and use skip counting strategies to find answers.
What can you do at home?
- Continue using Mathletics.
- Practise skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s while walking, driving, or completing everyday tasks.
- Play doubling games by asking your child to quickly double numbers from 0–10 (e.g. "What is double 7?"). Encourage them to explain how they worked out the answer.
Wellbeing
Students will also be completing a 'Respectful Relationships' lesson, students will begin exploring Stress Management. They will learn that everyone experiences different emotions and discover simple strategies to help them feel calm and focused. Through fun, interactive activities such as The Slo Mo Giant Mirror, students will practise slowing down, paying attention to their movements, and developing self-regulation skills that support a calm and positive classroom environment.
What can you do at home?
- Practise a "slow motion challenge" together. Take turns choosing simple movements, such as waving, stretching, clapping, or pretending to throw a ball, while the other person copies them in slow motion, just like looking in a mirror.
- Talk about how slowing your body down made you feel and when using slow, calm movements might be helpful, such as when feeling frustrated, worried, or excited.
