Year 2 Netball – First Match

“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”

An extremely excited group of Loreto Year 2s took their first step last Friday, playing in their first ever netball games!

There was a big crowd in attendance at the Windsor Gardens courts with our Pink and Green teams playing alongside each other on a perfect sunny evening.

The teams have been training hard for several weeks. Our coaches Georgina, Liz, Carly and Beth are doing a brilliant job helping the girls learn the positions, understand the rules and develop their catching and passing skills. Friday’s first game involved a few nerves, lots of encouragement from the sidelines, plus regular reminders about which way we were going!

We saw some impressive teamwork on display already and well done to Pearl who scored our first ever goal! We had a couple of unfortunate tumbles on court, but it was great to see the girls bounce straight back up and rejoin the fray.

Of course, the highlight came after the game with lollies and the team cheer, belted out with gusto.

Well done to everyone who took the court on Friday. We hope that you have a lot of fun on your netball journey!

Discus Record

A number of Loreto students have been involved in our Spring Athletics program over the last 7 weeks. In Week 1 the girls got to try discus and one amazing throw by Maria P (3 Gold) had the coaches scrambling for the record books. Sure enough, Maria’s incredible throw of 17.37m had smashed the school record of 11.47m!

The Australian discus record is 69.64m by Dani Stevens, set in the 2017 World Championships. We may need a bigger oval if Maria continues on her path!

LORETOlympics

Our Spring Athletics students finished off their 7-week program with the LORETOlympics event on Thursday afternoon – a mini athletics carnival involving sprints, long jump, high jump, shot put and discus. Well done to everyone who took part. Here are the medal winners:

Swimming Achievement

Well done to Evie H (5 Gold) who competed at the Immanuel Short Course Swimming Carnival last weekend while representing Norwood Swimming Club. Evie competed in four events, gaining Personal Bests in three of the four events. She also managed to win her first medal representing the club, coming 2nd in the 100m breaststroke. After finishing in 4th place at the last race meet, Evie was over the moon to snare a medal and a new PB!

Well done, Evie!

Backhand Brilliance

Loreto’s Friday afternoon tennis campaign kicked off last week with a fixture against St Andrews on the Patch courts. Alexis, Brooke and Riaana all fought valiantly, winning plenty of points and engaging in some fantastic rallies but we couldn’t quite break through for a win.

With shadows lengthening, Eleanor was involved in a titanic struggle in our final singles fixture for the afternoon. Could she hold on for our first win?

The game ebbed and flowed. Eleanor was strong on serve and made some lovely forehand winners but the backhand wasn’t quite clicking. At 3 games all and deuce, the next point would decide the match. The players rallied back and forward on the decisive point before the St Andrews player hit the ball wide to Eleanor’s backhand side. Uh oh… This time however Eleanor nailed her backhand and hit it up the line for a winner. Game, set, match Loreto!

Point of interest: Steffi Graf was one of the world’s greatest tennis players, winning 22 majors and at one stage holding the No 1 ranking for 186 consecutive weeks (a record equalled only by Serena Williams). Steffi achieved all this despite having what was perceived to be a weak backhand. She developed a tactical “slice backhand” – largely used just to stay in points – and would use quick footwork to manoeuvre the ball onto her dominant forehand side as often as she could. It obviously worked for her!
