Old Geelong Gaol and Magistrates Court

Earlier this term, Year 10 students had the opportunity to visit the Old Geelong Gaol and the Geelong Magistrates Court, gaining an insight into the region's justice system, past and present.

At the Old Geelong Gaol, students stepped back in time, exploring the cramped cells and hearing stories of the inmates once held within its bluestone walls. Guides shared tales of daring escapes, harsh conditions, and the gaol's long history dating back to the 1850s. Many students were struck by how different justice looked in the past compared to today.

Later that morning, we looked at the modern justice system with a visit to the Geelong Magistrates Court, where students observed real proceedings from the public gallery. Some of the cases in court that day included arson, assault and property damage. Seeing the courtroom in action helped bring to life what we've been learning in class about our legal system.
