Responding to a Grievance

One of the most important roles of the Australian Principals Federation is supporting members when the challenges of school leadership become personal.

Many of our members reach out when they need support responding to a grievance, complaint or Merit Protection Board (MPB) matter. These situations can be stressful, time-consuming and, for many principals and assistant principals, unfamiliar territory. Even experienced school leaders can find themselves questioning the right process, the appropriate response and what they should, or should not, put in writing.

The first message we give members is simple: you do not need to navigate these matters alone.

The Australian Principals Federation can provide advice regarding how to respond to a Grievance as well as represent members at Merit Protection Board (MPB) Hearings. The APF’s experience in representing members at MPB Hearings means that the process is far less stressful for Principals.
