Celebrating Learning, Leadership and Community

The past week has been a wonderful reminder that some of the most powerful learning experiences happen when students are given opportunities to connect, create, lead and celebrate together. Across two very different events, our students demonstrated curiosity, respect, leadership and a genuine enthusiasm for learning.

Celebrating NAIDOC Week

Last Friday, our school came together to celebrate NAIDOC Week and this year's theme, "50 Years Deadly", recognising the rich histories, cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Our day began with a beautiful Welcome and Smoking Ceremony led by Marbee Williams, a proud Boonwurrung man and member of the Yalukit Willam, the Traditional Owners of the land on which St Kilda Park Primary School stands. It was a thoughtful and meaningful way to begin the day, providing students and staff with an opportunity to reflect on the significance of Country and the world's oldest continuing culture.

Throughout the day, students participated in a range of engaging activities that celebrated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, history and knowledge. We were also incredibly fortunate to have Theresa Moore, a valued member of our SKiPPS community, sharing her knowledge and helping students deepen their understanding through a variety of hands-on learning experiences.

Days like these are an important part of our curriculum, helping students develop respect, understanding and appreciation for the rich cultures and histories that continue to shape Australia today.

Market Day Success

This week also saw our annual Year 6 Market Day, one of the highlights of the school calendar and a fantastic example of authentic, student-led learning.

After weeks of planning and preparation, our Year 6 students transformed the school into a bustling marketplace, running an incredible range of stalls and attractions including a wood-fired pizza stand, chocolate toss, escape room, haunted house, disco and many more creative activities.

Students from across the school arrived armed with their gold coins and had a wonderful time deciding where to spend them. A particular highlight was seeing our Foundation students experience their very first Market Day, supported throughout the morning by their Year 5 buddies, who helped them visit stalls, make choices and enjoy all the excitement.

Beyond the fun, Market Day provides our Year 6 students with valuable opportunities to develop leadership, teamwork, organisation, budgeting, customer service and problem-solving skills as they experience many of the challenges involved in planning and running a small business. The money raised will also help support their graduation celebrations later this year, making the event both educational and purposeful.

A huge thank you to our Year 6 students for the enthusiasm, creativity and effort they invested in making the day such a success. Thank you also to our staff and parent volunteers whose support behind the scenes helped bring the event to life.

Both of these events showcase what makes SKiPPS such a special place. Whether celebrating culture, developing leadership or creating opportunities for authentic learning, they remind us that some of our most memorable school experiences happen when our whole community comes together.
