B'day fun at MKC

Our beloved maintenance officer, Glenn, had something extra to smile about recently as he was surprised with a wonderful birthday card signed by staff and students, carefully curated by our Year 12 students.

The MacKillop Maintenance Team are always busy keeping events running smoothly and the College Grounds in tip-top shape, so it was lovely to see students recognising Glenn's dedication and finding ways to show appreciation.

Building future pathways at MacKillop!

Students enjoyed the chance to discover the wide range of career and subject pathways on offer here at MacKillop recently. Viewing the Creating Futures Expo with parents and caregivers and attending information sessions.

A room filled with colour, learning and curiosity, each Learning Area created a wonderful display to showcase to students how they could succeed as they continue their learning journey in the Senior Secondary years. With the opportunity to seek guidance and advice from staff on their future decisions, this evening was a vital resource for students exploring their options.

A big thank you to all staff who contributed to making this evening such a success.

Year 7 Art

The future of talented Tasmanian landscape painters is looking bright after our Year 7 students recently completed these amazing landscape paintings.

Inspired by iconic local landscapes, student developed skills and knowledge of colour theory before starting their own expression of place. Starting with a black background, students outlined key details in white chalk, then layered dabs and dashes of carefully blended acrylic paint.

We're sure you'll agree, they should be really proud of these amazing works. They really are exceptional examples of what students can achieve.

Learning new skills in action!

Last week a group of Trade Readiness students ventured to the TasTAFE Clarence Campus, to try their hand at glazing and create a chessboard design.

It was wonderful to see students engaged in their learning as they paid close attention to the finer details and worked on their craft.

Our Year 12 students received their Class of 2026 Leavers Jumpers recently. A special tradition that acknowledges them as leaders of the College as they embark upon their final year at MacKillop Catholic College. Perfect to stay warm in the winter weather.

Dance at MKC – Term 2 Highlights

It has been an incredibly busy and exciting term for Dance, with our students representing the College with pride, professionalism, and outstanding teamwork across multiple dance events.

On Tuesday 5 May, 21 Dance students travelled to Caloundra to perform at the Sunshine Coast Dance Eisteddfod. Over three days, we had 10 soloists and 4 group performances, all of whom danced beautifully and demonstrated the commitment that defines our Dance program. It wasn’t all business, though! Students also enjoyed a fantastic day at Wet’n’Wild, followed by an unforgettable night seeing MJ the Musical in Brisbane. It was a jam‑packed trip, but an amazing experience for everyone involved.

On Friday 29 May, more than 70 students from Years 7-12 took to the stage at DanceLife Unite, delivering another round of strong group performances. Their stage presence was outstanding, and the atmosphere backstage was electric, with students supporting and celebrating one another.

The momentum continues as we prepare for the Southern Tasmanian Dance Eisteddfod on 9th of July. We will be presenting four group routines, along with 11 duos in the Educational Duo section. Students are continually rehearsing, showing a genuine passion for dance as they work to refine their routines and ensure they are performance‑ready.

Dance at MKC continues to grow in strength, spirit, and community. We are incredibly proud of our students and look forward to seeing them shine!

Term 2 Sports Update:

Netball: MKC Year 10 D1 - Currently 2nd on the ladder and undefeated

MKC Year 8 D1 - Currently 2nd on the ladder

MKC Year 7 White D2 - Currently 1st on the ladder and undefeated

Hockey: Boys Year 9/10 going strong, 2nd on the ladder, Girls team is improving each week.

Waterpolo: Participation fantastic, Year 7/8 Boys blue yet to lose.

Badminton: Great participation and an amazing effort by all.

Footy: Year 7/8s kicking things off this week

Rugby: Great participation and representing the College with pride.

MacKillop Rock Band, Choir and Band on Tour

Our talented musicians at MacKillop, travelled to Corpus Christi Catholic School and St Brigids Catholic School this week. To perform a variety of their greatest hits including, an aladdin medley, the avengers theme, fix you and even using their instruments to create the sounds of a train robbery!

What a wonderful opportunity for younger students to enjoy an afternoon of music and to get a glimpse of what life as a student may be like at MacKillop.

Surfing TAS Schools Competition

MacKillop Catholic College students took on tough conditions at the recent Surfing TAS Schools Competition, battling small, windy surf and messy onshore conditions throughout the day. Despite the waves being far from perfect, the team still managed to make the most of it and put in some solid performances against other schools from around Tasmania taking home 5 wins across the comp finals.

U16 MR shield for Girls 1st Place: Ada and Frankie

U16 MR shield for Boys 1st Place: Joe and Hudson

U19 MR shield for Girls 1st Place: Willow and Millie

U16 Boys B Division: 1st place Marlin, 2nd Place Alby, 3rd Place, Tommy, 4th Place Maurice.

The conditions made every heat super competitive, with only a few good waves coming through for surfers to catch.

“The conditions are definitely tricky with it being very small and limited heats to catch, making it very competitive,” said Archie Zawadzki.

The windy onshore conditions made the waves weak and difficult , adding another challenge for competitors. Even with the rough surf, the vibe on the beach stayed positive, with students cheering each other on between heats .

“It was a good comp, fun and everything, but very challenging and a good challenge,” he said.

Overall, the competition was a great experience for the MacKillop team, giving students the chance to represent their school, improve their surfing under pressure and comp conditions , and spend the day in the water with their mates.

Child Studies

Our Year 10 Child Studies Foundation Class, recently had the exciting opportunity to chat with new mother and MKC teacher Mrs Mikaela Cashion, on her journey to motherhood and everything she has learnt in the past few weeks.

Little baby Opal popped in for a visit to the College, much to the delight of students.

With her gorgeous rosey cheeks this was certainly an enjoyable lesson for our Child Studies students.
