AUSTRAC fines agencies that failed to enrol

AUSTRAC has begun issuing fines to real estate agencies that have failed to enrol under Australia's anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing (AML/CTF) laws. Businesses face infringement notices of $21,840, with penalties potentially accumulating daily. 

 

The scale of non-compliance is alarming. According to Real Estate Business, just 18,350 of approximately 45,000 real estate offices nationwide had enrolled by 1 October – suggesting almost 60% had yet to meet their obligations.  

 

Fortunately, the vast majority of our members have already enrolled - the Lion's share with FirstAML. However, any member who has not must act immediately. 

 

AUSTRAC has confirmed that further infringement notices will follow, warning businesses that continued non-compliance will attract enforcement action. 

 

Remember, enrolment is only the first step. Agencies must also have appropriate AML/CTF programmes, risk assessments, customer identification procedures and staff training in place.

Registration is now open for next year’s First National State Awards nights. 

 

These events give members an opportunity to recognise the people behind their results, celebrate achievements with colleagues and bring their teams together outside the day-to-day demands of agency life. 

 

Register early so your office can confirm numbers, plan travel and accommodation, and give team members plenty of notice. Select the awards night for your state or region and secure your places through the member portal.
