2026 Awards Night

Our 2026 Awards Night at QPAC was a truly special occasion and one of the highlights of the year. It provided an opportunity to pause and celebrate the achievements, growth and character of our students, while also recognising the many people who have supported them along the way.

As I looked around the concert hall, filled with students, families and staff, I was reminded of the strength of the Marist community. Success is rarely achieved alone. Behind every student recognised on the night stands a family that has encouraged and supported, teachers who have challenged and guided, and friends who have walked alongside them throughout their journey.

While the evening celebrated excellence across academics, sport, culture, leadership and service, it also recognised the values that underpin a Marist education: commitment, humility, perseverance and a willingness to serve others. We are incredibly proud of all our students, not only those receiving awards, but every young man who embraced opportunities, challenged himself and contributed positively to College life throughout the year.

A particular highlight was the presentation of the College's most prestigious special awards, recognising students who have made an outstanding contribution to the life of Marist College Ashgrove. Congratulations to Thomas Long, recipient of the Father Walter Cain Memorial Prize for Contribution to the Religious Tone of the College; Alessander Javier, recipient of the Parents and Friends Association Award for Creative Arts – Overall; Ewan Wood, recipient of the Des Ridley Memorial Cup for Sportsman of the Year; Archer Mellifont, recipient of the Doctor Alban J Lynch Character Cup; and James Dee, recipient of the Brother Terence Heinrich Memorial Prize for First Aggregate in Year 12.

The evening was also enriched by the incredible talents of our music and performing arts students. Our College Choir and Orchestras brought a wonderful sense of occasion to the celebration, while performances from the cast of School of Rock showcased the energy, confidence and creativity that continue to thrive at Marist. Their performances were a powerful reminder that education is about far more than academic achievement. It is also about discovering passions, developing talents and having the confidence to share those gifts with others.

To our parents and caregivers, thank you for your ongoing partnership and support. The success of our students is built on the strong relationship between home and school, and we are deeply grateful for the role you play in helping our young men flourish.

Congratulations to all award recipients and to every student whose efforts helped make 2026 such a memorable year. It was an evening filled with pride, gratitude and joy, and a wonderful celebration of all that makes our Marist community so special.

AIC Track & Field Championships Success

Last week, our Marist athletes took to the track for the AIC Championships, the culmination of months of dedication, sacrifice and hard work. What followed was another remarkable chapter in the proud history of athletics at Marist College Ashgrove.

There was much on the line as our Secondary team sought an extraordinary 12th consecutive AIC Aggregate Championship, while our Primary team aimed for a remarkable sixth straight title. We are thrilled to share that both our Secondary and Primary athletes rose to the occasion, to continue one of the most impressive winning streaks in Marist sport.

While winning championships is certainly something to celebrate, what impressed me most was the way our students carried themselves throughout the competition. Their encouragement of one another, resilience in challenging moments and genuine pride in representing the blue and gold represent the very best of Marist.

We are also proud to acknowledge the outstanding individual and team performances that resulted in new Championship records being established. Congratulations to Leo Mylne, who set new AIC records in the 100m (12.64s) and 200m (25.86s), Hayden Lockhart, who established a new AIC 100m record (10.84s), and the Opens 4x100m Relay team of Isaac Ting, Ben Hawley, Bob Ackerie and Riley Hansel, who set a new AIC record time of 42.81 seconds. Congratulations also to the U16 4x100m Relay team of Hayden Lockhart, Dusty Miller, Darcy Webb and Guy de Putron, who set a new College record time of 43.59 seconds. These achievements are a testament to the dedication, talent and hard work of our student-athletes.

We acknowledge the exceptional leadership of Co-Head Coaches Mr Rob Martin and Mr Thomas Prole, whose dedication, expertise and passion have been instrumental throughout the season. We also extend our sincere thanks to Mr Richard Graham for his longstanding contribution to the Marist Athletics program and the support he continues to provide to our athletes and coaches. Together, their leadership has helped foster a culture of excellence that continues to thrive.

We also thank our coaches, staff and families for the encouragement and support they have provided throughout the season.

Congratulations to all members of the Marist Athletics team on a tremendous championship campaign. Your efforts, commitment and pride in the blue and gold continue to inspire our College community.

Year 12 Masterclasses Commence

As our Year 12 students enter the final weeks of their schooling, there is a growing sense of anticipation for what lies ahead. While external examinations are an important milestone, they are also an opportunity for students to reflect on how far they have come. We are confident that the dedication and resilience they have demonstrated throughout the year will serve them well in the weeks ahead.

We thank our teaching staff for their ongoing support and expertise and wish all Year 12 students every success as they prepare for their final assessments. We are proud of their efforts and look forward to celebrating their achievements in the weeks ahead.

Basketball CBSQ Junior Secondary Championships

From 15 to 18 October, a number of Marist College Ashgrove students will represent the College at the CBSQ Junior Secondary Basketball Championships.

The tournament provides an excellent opportunity for our young basketballers to test themselves against strong competition from across Queensland while continuing to develop their skills, teamwork and love of the game. Participation at this level is a testament to the commitment, discipline and dedication these students have shown throughout the season.

Beyond the results, the Championships are an opportunity for our students to demonstrate the values that underpin Marist sport, including respect, resilience, humility and teamwork. We encourage our players to embrace the experience, support one another and represent the College with pride both on and off the court.

We thank our coaches Mr Stephen Carroll & Mr James Lymer, staff and families for their ongoing support and wish all players every success at the Championships.

Formula High School Track Day

On 16 October, a group of Marist College Ashgrove students will take part in the Formula High School Track Day, an exciting opportunity to engage with STEM learning in a real-world environment.

The event gives students the chance to apply their knowledge of engineering, design, data analysis and problem-solving while working collaboratively and gaining firsthand experience in the world of motorsport and innovation. It is a valuable opportunity to develop critical thinking, teamwork and creativity while exploring career pathways in science, technology and engineering.

Experiences such as the Formula High School Track Day highlight the importance of learning beyond the classroom and encourage students to challenge themselves through practical and engaging experiences.

We extend our sincere thanks to Mr AJ Gray for his leadership, dedication and commitment in supporting this program and creating such a valuable opportunity for our students.  We wish all participating students an enjoyable and successful day as they represent the College with enthusiasm, curiosity and pride.

Head of College Tour

On 16 October, Marist College Ashgrove will welcome prospective families to our Head of College Tour, providing an opportunity to experience the vibrant life of the College firsthand.

These tours offer families valuable insight into our Marist tradition, academic excellence, extensive co-curricular opportunities and the strong sense of community that defines life at Marist. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore our campus, meet members of our community and gain a deeper understanding of the opportunities available to students.

We extend our sincere thanks to Rachel Rainbird, Director of Enrolments, and Holly Stevenson, whose professionalism, dedication and warm hospitality play an important role in ensuring families feel welcomed and informed throughout their visit. Their commitment to showcasing the very best of Marist College Ashgrove is instrumental in helping families begin their journey with our College.

We look forward to welcoming attending families and sharing with them the many opportunities that make Marist College Ashgrove such a special community.

eWaste and Stationery Aid Drive

From 9:00am until 11:00am at the McMahon Oval on 17 October, the Marist College Ashgrove community is encouraged to support our eWaste and Stationery Aid Drive, an initiative that combines environmental responsibility with service to those in need.

By donating unwanted electronic items for recycling and contributing stationery supplies, families can help reduce waste while providing valuable resources to students and communities who will benefit from our generosity. It is a practical way to live out the Marist values of stewardship, compassion and service.

We encourage all members of our community to get down and support this important cause. Every item donated, whether large or small, contributes to making a meaningful difference.

A special thank you to Kathryn Badini for her leadership and commitment in coordinating this initiative. Through her efforts, our community has the opportunity to support both environmental sustainability and educational equity.

We look forward to seeing the Marist community come together once again in support of this worthwhile cause. Thank you for helping make a difference.

Student Leaders Summit

From 17 to 20 October, Marist College Ashgrove's student leaders of 2027 will join with student leaders from other Marist schools as they participate in the Student Leaders Summit, an important opportunity to further develop their leadership skills, strengthen their capacity to serve others and grow in their understanding of what it means to lead in the Marist tradition.

Throughout the Summit, students will engage in workshops, discussions and team-building activities focused on communication, collaboration, servant leadership and building positive communities. These experiences encourage our young leaders to reflect on the impact they can have on those around them and how they can lead with humility, courage and integrity.

Leadership at Marist is not measured by a badge or a title. It is demonstrated through service, authenticity and a willingness to place the needs of others before our own. The Student Leaders Summit provides our future leaders with an opportunity to reflect on these qualities and consider how they can help others flourish within our community.

A special thank you to the Marist Student Association (MSA) and our Mission Team for their leadership, organisation and commitment in facilitating this important experience. Their dedication ensures our student leaders are equipped to make a positive and lasting contribution to the life of the College.

We wish all participants a rewarding and inspiring few days and look forward to seeing their leadership continue to enrich our Marist community.

Graduate Arts Exhibition & Awards Night – Drama, Visual Art, FTV

Marist College Ashgrove will celebrate the creativity, talent and achievements of our graduating students at the Graduate Arts Exhibition & Awards Night on 19 October.

This special evening provides an opportunity to showcase the outstanding work produced by our Year 12 students across the Visual Arts, Drama, and Film, Television and New Media, and to recognise the dedication, passion and artistic growth they have demonstrated throughout their time at the College. The exhibition highlights the creativity, skill and unique perspectives of our graduating students, while the awards acknowledge excellence and commitment within the Arts.

The Graduate Arts Exhibition & Awards Night is a fitting celebration of the important role the Arts play in enriching College life, fostering imagination and encouraging students to express their ideas and stories in meaningful ways.

We congratulate all students whose work is featured in the Visual Art exhibition and Drama and FTV presentations, and thank our dedicated Arts staff for their guidance, encouragement and commitment in nurturing the talents of our young artists. In particular, we acknowledge and thank Rebecca Taylor, Pierce Hardy, Julia Wilken and Stacey Finch for their passion, expertise and tireless support of our students throughout the year. Their dedication has helped create a vibrant and inspiring Arts culture at Marist.

We warmly invite all members of the Marist community to attend and support our graduating students as we celebrate their achievements and the vibrant culture of the Arts at Marist College Ashgrove.

Year 7 Day Retreat

Our Year 7 students will take part in their Year 7 Day Retreat on 19 October, an important opportunity to step away from the routine of school life and reflect on their journey as members of the Marist community.

The retreat will provide students with the chance to build stronger connections with their peers, deepen their understanding of Marist values and reflect on the importance of relationships, gratitude and personal growth. Facilitated by Dave Jorna of Project Hatch, the retreat will see students participate in an engaging and reflective program designed to encourage self-awareness, foster meaningful connections and challenge them to consider how they can contribute positively to the lives of others as young men of character.

Retreat experiences play a significant role in the faith and formation journey of our students, fostering a sense of belonging, reflection and community that is central to a Marist education.

We thank our Mission Team, staff, student leaders and Dave Jorna for their preparation and support in making this experience possible and wish our Year 7 students a rewarding and meaningful day.

As I reflect on the many activities and achievements captured in this newsletter, I am once again reminded of what makes Marist such a special community. Thank you for the role each of you plays in supporting our young men and helping them to flourish.

I wish you and your families every blessing for the week ahead.

All the best, Paul

May our loving God with Mary our good mother and St Marcellin Champagnat walk with all members of the Marist College Ashgrove family.
