School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS)

At South Geelong Primary School, we use a framework called School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS). This approach focuses on explicitly teaching and recognising positive behaviours so that all students can learn in a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment. SWPBS helps students understand what is expected of them and supports them to make positive choices in their learning and interactions with others.
This term, we are continuing to build on our work around teaching expected behaviours in the classroom, using our school’s Expectation Matrix. Teachers are working closely with students to model, practise, and reinforce what kindness, respect, and integrity look like in different settings across the school. For example, downball is a very popular activity during recess and lunchtimes. We recently sat down with all our keen downball enthusiasts to come up with some agreed expectations when playing with our friends.
We are also excited to be introducing a new layer to our SWPBS approach by linking our classroom reward systems with our new school communities: Lakorra, Warri, and Yaluk. Students will soon collect Ricky Tokens for demonstrating our school values. These tokens will be counted within each class and contribute to community totals.
Each assembly, we will celebrate and announce which community is leading the way in demonstrating our expected behaviours. This is a fantastic opportunity to build a sense of belonging, teamwork, and pride, while continuing to promote positive behaviour across the school.
We look forward to sharing updates and celebrating our students’ success throughout the term!
