Year 3/4 have had so much fun this term.  It all started with the Handball Comp and continued on from there.

Handball Competition by Max and Archer

Last term we set off to make a handball competition for the whole school to be involved in.  It went for 8 weeks and ended on 11th August.  10 teams battled it out over recess and lunch with the grand final taking 3 days to do!  The winning team was My Back.

We would like to thank the competitors, the refs especially Mr Hyatt and Oscar, and a special thank you to Mr Hyatt for giving up his precious break time and for letting us have this great handball comp.  It is our dream to make a bigger, world wide competition! 

English: Rowan of Rin, Handwriting, Dialogue and Grammar

Rowan of Rin by Kenzi and Ella

Rowan of Rin by Emily Rodda is our novel study this term.  We have looked at the characteristics of the main characters and how the author has used adjectives and verbs to describe the nouns.  Vocabulary has been a focus for us.  We have made a “Bump It Up Wall” to use, to know what level we are working at and what we need to do to move along the continuum. 

Handwriting by Harper and Bella

This term year 4 has been focusing on our handwriting across all subjects.  Year 4 are joining all letters to produce the NSW Foundation Cursive.  Year 3 is learning to do entries and exits of all letters.  When we do the correct handwriting in all subjects it helps us to take pride in our work.  

Grammar by Edwina and Reid

Grammar is something we have been learning to improve to help our sentence structure when writing and talking.  We can now identify different types of nouns, adjectival and adverbial phrases, dependent and independent clauses and finally how to use dialogue.  We use our own Cold Writes to see what level we are at and then the “Bump It Up Wall” to see where to go next.

Dialogue by Ferg, Brayden and Jack

Dialogue is used in a narrative to represent when a character is saying something.  It is shown by speech marks which are placed before and after the dialogue.  If we over use them, it will turn into a script for a play.

Maths by Nate, Mackenzie G and Angus

In maths we have learned about 3D objects, division and now we are focusing on fractions.  In 3D objects, we discussed the differences between 2D and 3D, identified the edges,faces and vertices of common 3D objects and found them in real life.  We tried very hard to become experts at sketching the object and its net.  As well as  looking at the top,side and front views.

Division was a bit trickier than 3D, but we discovered that division is the inverse operation of multiplication, and how important knowing our times tables are!  Our unit of fractions has just started and we know the bottom number is the denominator and the top number is the numerator. We've also realised that division and fractions are related.

Religion by Shane and Thibaud

In religion we have been preparing a class Liturgy.  We chose to be in the Gathering, Scripture, Responding and Go Forth group and then worked together to write prayers, make slideshows, choose songs and respond to the scripture reading.  We will be sharing a special gift with our classmates as part of the Go Forth. This is the first time we have made our own class Liturgy up.

Band by Charlotte and Mila

Band is fun for 3/4 and we are grateful for the chance to learn a variety of wind, brass and percussion instruments.  Sometimes reading the notes is a bit tricky but we still try very hard. 

Science by Mackenzie L, Levi O and Levi W

In science, we have been making toys to challenge our team work with others and our creativity with engineering and designing the perfect toy for our age group.  The process we use is 

• Read and understand the design brief
• Draw and label a diagram
• In pairs make the toy
• Evaluate the toy 
• Redesign  and make a better version of the toy.

So far we have made marble runs and helicopters.  Our “Fairy Godmother Hoy” came to school last week with the great idea of a challenge!  We had to put our minds together and make a whole class marble run.  It was so much fun and it actually worked!  

Our goal is to follow the process to create our own individual toy by the end of the term.

Drama by Evie and Oscar

We perfected a Cinderella reader’s theatre.  It was so funny because we had been learning about gender stereotypes, so when we performed the play the characters were mixed up.  It was interesting also to find out that we can’t assume a person’s gender based on their name because there are names like Darcy/Darcie, Max, Sam, Charlie/Charlee that could be male or female names.
