Whats Happening in the Kitchen and Garden for 2026?

7th September is Threatened Species Day, in honour of Benjamin the last known Tasmanian Tiger who died in 1936. In kitchen and garden this fortnight we are highligting 6 animals that are classified threatened which means that if we dont do everything we can to help these animals, there is a high risk they will  become endangered and then extinct.

Students have created some amazing posters highlighting some key facts about their animals and then will recreate them on a cupcake in kitchen. This project helps our students connect in with nature and the environment around them. Develop research and investigative skills and then use their creative skills to design a poster for all to read and learn.

KITCHEN

This fortnight is the Threatened Species bake-off, where teams select a threatened animal and prepare a poster with their research on how we can protect Australia's wildlife.  They then select decorations to best represent their animal on a cupcake.  Selected entries from each class will be showcased on the Threatened Species Commissioner's Facebook page to enter the bake-off.  Make sure you take a look at all the entries from across Australia!  Anyone can get involved with entries open 1-15th September so perhaps you would like to get busy in the kitchen at home and post your creation with #TSBakeOff2026 or email tsbakeoff@dcceew.gov.au.

As always we love for you to come and join us in the kitchen to see (and taste!) just what the students are capable of.  Just sign in at the office and come on down to the kitchen - we'll have an apron waiting for you!

SNACK SHACK

This week our Snack Shackers brought back our famous rainbow slice and it stood up to its popularity and was a complete sell out!! Next week we will serving threatened species slice which will be a selection of different slices in the theme of the habitats and environments you find our Threatened Species Bake Offs animals (kangaroon island echidna, kangaroo island koals, green sea turtle, hooded plover, bent wing bat & gouldian finch). If anyone is interested in helping out with this program, we meet on a Tuesday session 5 (2.15-3.15) or 8.45am wednesdays to cut the slices. Please contact Clancey to see how you can get involved! 

Food Scrap Friday

Our Food Scrap Friday team are looking for new team members! If you have ever wondered how we make our fabulous compost for the garden and how our school is very clever at keeping tonnes of food scraps out of landfill, then the Food Scrap Friday team is for you! Come along this Friday before school as find out how you can get involved.

Recycling at Surfside - SHREDDED PAPER!

We need your shredded paper for our compost bins. If you have access to shredded paper at home or work, we would like you to donate it. You can leave it at the office or drop off to the garden Tues, Wed and Thursdays

VOLUNTEERS

If you have a spare hour or 2 per week and would like to volunteer in the best program on the Bellarine, please reach out and we will send you some info on how to get involved. Please make sure you check into the office to complete your volunteer induction (everyone must complete this each year - even if you have volunteered in the past) and have a valid Working With Children Check.
