Changes to student reporting for Mathematics

We want to keep you updated on the changes to student reporting for Mathematics in line with the introduction of the revised Mathematics Curriculum Version 2.0 (Mathematics 2.0), developed by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA).

The revised curriculum introduces changes to the way student achievement is assessed and reported from Foundation to Year 10. While Version 1.0 used three separate achievement standards—Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability—Version 2.0 features a single achievement standard that spans five strands for Foundation to Level 2 and six strands for Level 3 and above.

At Carlton Gardens Primary School, we will begin reporting against the revised curriculum from Semester 1 2025. Under the new reporting model, your child will receive one overall achievement score in Mathematics, calculated by averaging their performance across the strands taught during the semester.

As the content and structure of the new curriculum differs from the previous version, the Mathematics Curriculum 2.0 achievement score is notdirectly comparable to the score reported under the old curriculum. This semester’s report will show your child’s achievement only, not their progress. However, in all future reports, your child’s overall progress in Mathematics will also be shown.

Please be aware that, due to the changes of content across achievement levels, your child’s Mathematics score this semester may appear lower than in previous semesters. This does not mean their learning or achievement has gone backwards—it simply reflects the changes to the curriculum and how achievement is now assessed.

These changes give teachers more flexibility to design meaningful learning experiences and support students in making deeper connections both within mathematics and across other learning areas.
