Burnie Campus Principal

Recently we have been meeting with many new families as they apply to attend the Burnie Campus for Kinder in 2027. I’ve met families who have recently arrived in Tasmania, families who have been here for generations, and families who have made Tassie home after moving from other parts of the world.
One of the key questions Mrs Polden or I ask at interview is, “What has brought you to Leighland Christian School?”. Without fail, their response will include our reputation in the community and that we are known to be a safe place for children to attend school. Of course, there are comments and questions about the academic programs and opportunities for their children, but knowing that their child will be cared for and safe is of paramount importance to them.
Does this mean we never have incidents to address, or behaviours to redirect or attitudes to change; of course it doesn’t. But when needed, this is done in a way that aims to be restorative and structured to see sustained change in the child that includes a better attitude and/or behaviour choices.
At the core of our school is a belief that each child is made in their Creator’s image with their own wonderful peculiarities, passions and promising futures. We see them, we know their strengths and areas for consolidation and encourage them to use the gifts God has given them. This drives how we work with them in the classroom, and supports their learning journey.
With the appointment of Mrs Hall, we continue to track students' data, identifying their gains and areas where targeted Tier 2 and Tier 3 intervention is needed to support their progress. Teachers regularly review this data, discuss it and formulate plans specific to the individual needs of the children in their class.
Literacy remains a core focus area as it impacts all other areas of learning and strong skills in this subject build stronger skills across all other areas.
We are looking forward to seeing you at Worship Wednesday (Wednesday 8.30 am in The Ark) and our Open Classrooms (as per the schedule emailed to parents in the holidays).
As Term 2 unfolds, we look forward to sharing it with each of our families and ensuring that we have in place opportunities for engagement, such as the first Learning about Learning at Leighland session that was held on Monday afternoon in the STEM room.
